History The cottage was built circa 1870 for Milton Cyrus Ewing and his wife, Augusta Anderson. It burned down in 1891, but it was rebuilt shortly after with pine lumber Ewing ordered from J. J. White of Columbia. The exterior remains the same nowadays except for its roof which was reshingled in 2010. Vaughn, Mississippi
Vaughan (also Vaughans or Vaughn) is an unincorporated community in Yazoo County, Mississippi. The settlement is east of Yazoo City. History Vaughan was founded in 1830 and named for Henry Vaughan, who had established a plantation nearby. The town was established on an old stagecoach line and was for many years the main trading center of Yazoo County, including a large part of Madison County east of the Big Black River. Casey Jones' railroad accident The famous railroad accident that killed 37-year-old engineer Casey Jones happened near Vaughan in the early morning hours of April 30, 1900. On July 24, 1953, a ceremony was held at Vaughan, where more than 3,000 persons gathered to witness the unveiling of a bronze marker at the spot where Casey met his fate. In attendance were Sim Webb, Casey's fireman, and Janie Jones, Casey's widow. Yazoo County is a county located in the U.S. state of Mississippi. As of the 2010 census, the population was 28,065. The county seat is Yazoo City. It is named for the Yazoo River, which forms its western border. Its name is said to come from a Choctaw language word meaning "River of Death." History The area which is now Yazoo County was acquired by the State of Mississippi from the Choctaw Indians in 1820. Yazoo County was established on January 21, 1823. It was the 19th county established in the State of Mississippi, and remains the largest in area. It was developed for cotton plantations, and the first had access to the major river. The first county seat was at Beatties Bluff. In 1829, the county seat was moved to Benton. In 1849 the county seat was moved again, to Yazoo City, where it remains.
