Rosebel Gold Mine
The Rosebel gold mine is jointly owned by Iamgold (95%) and the government of Suriname (5%). The mine is located in the mineral-rich Brokopondo District in northeastern Suriname, South America. The Rosebel property lies approximately 85 kilometers south of the capital city of Paramaribo. The mining concession covers 170 square kilometers. History Gold was first discovered in the Rosebel area in 1879 when small-scale miners were reported to have been working on the concession. Since its discovery, the land has been both publicly and privately owned and operated. Notable private owners have included Placer Development of Vancouver from 1974 to 1977, the Grasshopper Aluminum Company from 1979 to 1985 and Golden Star Resources Ltd. from 1992. Brokopondo Reservoir
The Brokopondo Reservoir, officially named Professor Doctor Ingenieur W. J. van Blommestein Meer, and also called the Brokopondostuwmeer, is a large reservoir in Suriname. It is named after the Surakarta-born Dutch hydrological engineer Willem Johan van Blommestein. With a surface area of approximately , depending on the current water level, it is one of the largest reservoirs in the world, covering nearly one percent of the country. Brownsweg
Brownsweg is a town and resort in Suriname in the Brokopondo District. Its population at the 2012 census was 4,793. History The town was named after the road that leads to the Brownsberg, and the Brownsberg Nature Park. It is situated near the Brokopondo Reservoir. In 1958 Brownsweg was built for the inhabitants of the area that was flooded after the construction of the Afobaka Dam. One of the main concerns was the transmigration of the 5,000 people living in the area. Bronsweg was a stop at the former Lawa Railway, and in 1959 the Prinses Marijke camp was built near the hamlet. The resort consists of the villages Wakibasoe 1, 2, 3, Bierhoedoematoe, Kadjoe, Nieuw Ganze, Djankakondre, Makambi, and Nieuw-Koffiekamp. Diana Marilva Pokie (born 1979) is a Surinamese politician. She was the assembly member from Brokopondo for the Brotherhood and Unity in Politics (BEP) before she was expelled. She returned to the assembly as the Brokopondo member representing the General Liberation and Development Party (ABOP) party. She became the first female vice-chairman of that party in 2019. Gross Rosebel Airstrip
Gross Rosebel Airstrip serves the Gross Rosebel mine, in the Brokopondo District of Suriname. The Rosebel concession owns this airstrip. The airstrip is mostly used for emergencies and charters. Security personnel are responsible for airstrip maintenance and lighting as well as aircraft scheduling and communication with the Suriname civil aviation authorities. The site communication package is equipped with an air to ground Unicom channel that links into site mobile radios.
