Brownsweg
Brownsweg is a town and resort in Suriname in the Brokopondo District. Its population at the 2012 census was 4,793. History The town was named after the road that leads to the Brownsberg, and the Brownsberg Nature Park. It is situated near the Brokopondo Reservoir. In 1958 Brownsweg was built for the inhabitants of the area that was flooded after the construction of the Afobaka Dam. One of the main concerns was the transmigration of the 5,000 people living in the area. Bronsweg was a stop at the former Lawa Railway, and in 1959 the Prinses Marijke camp was built near the hamlet. The resort consists of the villages Wakibasoe 1, 2, 3, Bierhoedoematoe, Kadjoe, Nieuw Ganze, Djankakondre, Makambi, and Nieuw-Koffiekamp. Brownsweg is often used to refer to most villages, because they have grown together, except for Bierhoedoematoe and Nieuw-Koffiekamp which are still detached. Brokopondo District
Brokopondo is a district of Suriname. Its capital city is Brokopondo; other towns include Brownsweg and Kwakoegron. The district has a population of 15,909, and an area of 7,364 square kilometres. History The Brokopondo district was established in 1958 out of the former Suriname District. The establishment of the district was related to the 1958 Brokopondo Agreement between the Government of Suriname and Alcoa for the creation of the Brokopondo Reservoir. The Brokopondo Reservoir is a large reservoir near Afobaka which was built between 1961 and 1964, and produces hydroelectric power that provides approximately half of the domestic electrical need. The plan was very controversial, and involved transmigrating many villages that were located in the area and flooded after the construction of the Afobaka Dam. Bigi Wey Sports Center
Bigi Wey Sports Center is a sports venue located in Brokopondo District, Suriname. It hosted a knockout tournament marking the 150th-anniversary of Suriname's emancipation day. In 2009, the Ilonka Elmont Foundation conducted a research into sports venues, sports needs and sports participation in Brownsweg. They inferred that Brownsweg needed a sports venue and planned to make one. Brownsberg
Brownsberg is a 515 metres high mountain in the Brokopondo District of Suriname. It is the namesake of the Brownsberg Nature Park. The mountain has been named after John Brown, a 19th-century gold miner. Overview Brownsberg is almost flat on top, because it is covered by a laterite cap which prevents erosion. The mountain is covered in rainforests, and has several waterfalls. It is home to a great variety of animals. 116 mammal species were recorded including eight species of monkeys, two of which are endemic to the Guiana Shield. 387 birds species have been recorded including the harpy eagle (''harpia harpyja''), scarlet macaw (''ara macao''), blue-cheeked parrot (''amazona dufresniana''), and the olive-sided flycatcher (''contopus cooperi''). Stoneiland
Stoneiland (also Ston Island is a peninsula, holiday resort and beach in the Brokopondo District in Suriname. History On 1 February 1964, the Afobaka Dam was built to provide hydro-electricity. This resulted in the creation of the Brokopondo Reservoir. Stoneiland was not flooded, but became a peninsula with a beach. In 2006, a former gold miner built a holiday resort near the beach. The island is located at the foot of the Brownsberg, and can be accessed from Brownsweg. The view from the beach is unexpected, because the remains of the rain forest can still be seen on the lake. Nieuw-Koffiekamp is a village in the resort of Brownsweg in the Brokopondo District of Suriname. It is a transmigration village built for the inhabitants of Koffiekamp which was flooded by the Brokopondo Reservoir after the construction of the Afobaka Dam. Resorts Of Suriname
The ten districts of Suriname are divided into 63 resorts (Dutch: ''ressorten''). Within the capital city of Paramaribo, a resort entails a neighbourhood; in other cases it is more akin to a municipality, consisting of a central place with a few settlements around it. The resorts in the Sipaliwini District are especially large, since the interior of Suriname is sparsely inhabited. The average resort is about and has almost 8,000 inhabitants. Brownsberg Nature Park
Brownsberg Nature Park is a nature park located in Suriname. The site measures 12,000 ha and is located in the district of Brokopondo around 130 km south from the capital city Paramaribo. The 500 meter high Brownsberg is the central point of the park. The site is located near the Brokopondo Reservoir. The park is managed by STINASU. Often the people of Suriname use the word ''Brownsberg'' as simple variant of Brownsberg Nature Park. Local people also write it as ''Bruijnsberg'', pronounced as ''Braynsberg''. Lawa Railway
The Lawa Railway (Dutch language, Dutch: ''Lawaspoorweg'' or later ''Landsspoorweg'') was a single-track metre gauge railway in Suriname. It was built during the gold rush in the early 20th century, from the harbour town Paramaribo to Dam at the Sara Creek (river), Sara Creek, but it was not extended to the gold fields at the Lawa River (South America), Lawa River, as originally intended. Medische Zending Primary Health Care Suriname, commonly known as Medische Zending (Dutch for "medical mission") or MZ is a Surinamese charitable organization offering primary healthcare to remote villages in the interior of Suriname. History The history of Medische Zending began on 3 October 1740 with J. Franz Reynier. Reynier, a medical doctor and missionary, and his wife came to Suriname on behalf of the Moravian Church. The purpose was not just to be a missionary, but also to provide medical health care including operations.
