Rose Hill, Garland, Texas
Rose Hill is an area located in southeast Garland, Texas, United States. It was formerly a distinct unincorporated community in Dallas County until annexed by Garland in 1970. The community was first settled in 1853 and composed of land grants by John Little, W.S. Peques, and J.W. Smith. It was named Rose Hill in 1931 either in honor of early settler P.W. Rose or after roses found at the local churchyard. The population was 117 in 1904 and diminished to 50 by 1910. It had featured a post office (1884-1906) as well as four stores, two churches, a school, a restaurant, a blacksmith, and approximately twenty residences. The population gradually increased to 175 in 1964, the last recorded population number until annexation by Garland six years later. Garland, Texas
Garland is a city in the U.S. state of Texas. It is located northeast of Dallas and is a part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex. It is located within Dallas County except for small portions located in Collin and Rockwall Counties. At the 2010 census, the city had a population of 226,876. In 2019, the population rose to 239,928, making it the 93rd-most populous city in the United States of America and the 12th-most populous city in Texas; by 2020, it had a population of 246,018. Garland is the third largest city in Dallas County by population and has access to downtown Dallas via public transportation including two Dart Blue Line stations and buses. The ''Handbook of Texas'' is a comprehensive encyclopedia of Texas geography, history, and historical persons published by the Texas State Historical Association (TSHA). History The original ''Handbook'' was the brainchild of TSHA President Walter Prescott Webb of The University of Texas history department. It was published as a two-volume set in 1952, with a supplemental volume published in 1976. In 1996, the New Handbook of Texas was published, expanding the encyclopedia to six volumes and over 23,000 articles. In 1999, the Handbook of Texas Online went live with the complete text of the print edition, all corrections incorporated into the handbook's second printing, and about 400 articles not included in the print edition due to space limitations.
