Roosevelt High School (Casper, Wyoming)
Roosevelt High School is a public school in the Natrona County School District Number 1, Natrona County School District in Casper, Wyoming, Casper, Wyoming, United States. It is an alternative high school that provides small classes, credit recovery, and college courses for students in grades nine through twelve. About 200 students attend the school. Its teachers have won awards. Its athletes have also been recognized. History The school was originally built in 1922 and named "North Casper School", later being renamed Roosevelt School in honor of Theodore Roosevelt. It was later converted into an alternative high school. That building, Roosevelt School (Casper, Wyoming), is now a historic building listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Casper is a city in, and the county seat of, Natrona County, Wyoming, United States. Casper is the second-largest city in the state, with the population at 59,038 as of the 2020 census. Only Cheyenne, the state capital, is larger. Casper is nicknamed "The Oil City" and has a long history of oil boomtown and cowboy culture, dating back to the development of the nearby Salt Creek Oil Field. The Natrona County School District #1 is a public school district, serving students in Natrona County, Wyoming, USA. Based in Casper, Wyoming, the district also serves the towns and communities of Alcova, Edgerton, Evansville, Midwest, Mills, Powder River, and Willow Creek. The principal of the majority of these schools is Adam Smith. The reason for this decision is a creat a close knit family between all of the schools of Casper Wyoming. The Roosevelt School in Casper, Wyoming, originally named North Casper School, was designed by leading Wyoming architectural firm Garbutt, Weidner & Sweeney in 1921 and was built in 1922. Need for the school followed from a post-World War I boom in Casper's economy and population, connected to a boom in the petroleum industry there. The school served as a neighborhood center in an otherwise-neglected area of the town. The North Casper area was across railroad tracks from the rest of Casper, and was fast-growing. In the words of Vivian Dwyer, principal of the school, it was "a district of small homes, meager means, and large families." Schooling was not available to all. In 1921 an expansion of the existing school was planned, but instead a new building was designed and built. Only one wing of six classrooms was finished in a timely fashion, due perhaps to a union-related work stoppage.
