Ronald Markarian
Ronald Hrant Markarian (June 27, 1931 – October 12, 2019) was the California State Director of the U.S. Selective Service System and a former Major General of the United States Air Force. Ronald Markarian was active in community affairs and has served in a variety of leadership roles in military, veteran and public service organizations. He served on several State and Federal boards and has been the Director of the United States Selective Service System in California since his appointment in 1987. He was instrumental in founding the Association of the United States Army (AUSA; Chapter 6105) in 1982, and served as the first president of the chapter and later serving two additional terms totaling 15 years as president. During his last presidency, the chapter was designated Best Chapter in AUSA for seven consecutive years, from 2000 to 2006. Varazdat Samuel "Varaz" Samuelian ( hy, Վարազդատ Սամվելի "Վարազ" Սամվելյան, 1917 – November 7, 1995) was a prominent Armenian American writer, painter and sculptor. Life and works Of Armenian descent, Varaz Samuelian was born in Yerevan, Armenia. His parents were survivors of the Armenian genocide. Samuelian eventually settled in France. During his time in Paris, Samuelian studied with renowned painters such as Othon Friesz, André Lhote and Fernand Léger. During World War II he was a German prisoner of war. Samuelian eventually settled in California in 1946. When arriving in California he moved to Burlingame to be closer with his brother. It was during this period in his life where he began to paint. 185th Infantry Regiment (United States)
The 185th Infantry Regiment is a unit of the United States Army made up of soldiers from the California Army National Guard, represented by the 1st Battalion, part of the 81st Stryker Brigade Combat Team. The 185th Infantry was first used for a unit that traced its lineage back to the 6th Infantry Battalion of the California National Guard.
