Ronald Lagden
Ronald Owen Lagden (21 November 1889 – 1 March 1915) was an English sportsman who played first-class cricket for Oxford University and represented England at rugby union. Early life and family Lagden was born in Maseru in what was then the British colony of Basutoland (now Lesotho). He is one of only a handful of first-class cricketers to be born in that country. Lagden had a younger brother, Reginald, who was a first-class cricketer for Oxford's rivals, Cambridge University, as well as playing with Surrey. Their father, Godfrey, later appeared in a single first-class match for the Marylebone Cricket Club at the age of 54. Ronald Lagden was educated at Marlborough College and Oriel College, Oxford. Maseru
Maseru is the capital and largest city of Lesotho. It is also the capital of the Maseru District. Located on the Caledon River, Maseru lies directly on the Lesotho–South Africa border. Maseru had a population of 330,760 in the 2016 census. The city was established as a police camp and assigned as the capital after the country became a British protectorate in 1869. Marylebone Cricket Club
Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) is a cricket club founded in 1787 and based since 1814 at Lord's Cricket Ground, which it owns, in St John's Wood, London. The club was formerly the governing body of cricket retaining considerable global influence. In 1788, the MCC took responsibility for the laws of cricket, issuing a revised version that year. Changes to these Laws are now determined by the International Cricket Council (ICC), but the copyright is still owned by MCC. 1911 Five Nations Championship
The 1911 Five Nations Championship was the second series of the rugby union Five Nations Championship following the inclusion of France into the Home Nations Championship. Including the previous Home Nations Championships, this was the twenty-ninth series of the annual northern hemisphere rugby union championship. Ten matches were played between 2 January and 25 March. It was contested by England, France, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Wales won the championship for the seventh time outright. The Varsity Match
The Varsity Match is an annual rugby union fixture played between the universities of Oxford University RFC, Oxford and Cambridge University R.U.F.C., Cambridge in England. The event began in 1872 with the first men's match, with interruptions only for the two World Wars. Since 1921, the game has been played at Twickenham Stadium, London. It is normally played in early December. Following the 140th match in 2022, Oxford have 62 wins, and Cambridge maintain the lead with 64; 14 games have ended in draws. Lord's Cricket Ground, commonly known as Lord's, is a cricket venue in St John's Wood, London. Maharaja Sir Bhupinder Singh, (12 October 1891 – 23 March 1938) was an Indian royal and cricket player. He was the ruling Maharaja of Patiala, Maharaja of the princely state of Patiala State, Patiala in British India from 1900 to 1938. The University Match (cricket)
The University Match in a cricketing context is generally understood to refer to the annual fixture between Oxford University Cricket Club and Cambridge University Cricket Club. From 2001, as part of the reorganisation of first-class cricket, the University Match was changed from a three-day first-class fixture, played at Lord's, to a one-day University Match at Lord's and a four-day first-class fixture played alternately at Fenner's and The Parks. In February, 2022 the MCC announced that from 2023 onwards the one-day fixture would no longer be held Lord's. However in September, 2022, following opposition from a section of its membership, the club decided that the match would be held at Lord's in 2023 to allow time for further consultation.
