Romtec Colorvision
The Colorvision is a handheld video game console developed and manufactured by Hong Kong-based company Romtec Enterprises, Ltd., released in Hong Kong and Europe in 1984. It is the first handheld video game console to have colored sprites on a LCD screen instead of overlays or VFD displays. Previous systems like The Entex Select-A-Game had games that came with overlays to enhance the graphics and play experience, while only the cartridge is needed on the Colorvision. It was manufactured and released by Romtec, but the console was also distributed under several brands, including Altic, Bazin and Bristol. Entex Select-A-Game
The Entex Select-a-game is a handheld game system released in 1981 by Entex Industries. Entex released six games for the device before they dropped support in 1982 in favor of the Entex Adventure Vision. Hardware The Select-a-Game uses a 7 x 16 vacuum fluorescent display (VFD) array of large dots as the main display. It can display two colors, red and blue. These are combined with static overlays for each game. Together they make up the display. The system is basically a display and controller for the games with no built-in processor power. Each game cartridge contains a microprocessor programmed with the appropriate game code in it. In this respect, it is very similar to the concept of Milton Bradley's Microvision system released a few years earlier. Magnavox Odyssey
The Magnavox Odyssey is the first commercial home video game console. The hardware was designed by a small team led by Ralph H. Baer at Sanders Associates, while Magnavox completed development and released it in the United States in September 1972 and overseas the following year. The Odyssey consists of a white, black, and brown box that connects to a television set, and two rectangular controllers attached by wires. It is capable of displaying three square dots and one line of varying height on the screen in monochrome black and white, with differing behavior for the dots depending on the game played. Adventure Vision is a cartridge-based video game console released by Entex Industries in either August or October 1982. The launch price of the system was $79.95. The monitor, game controls, and computer hardware are all contained within a single portable unit. The LED monitor can only display red pixels.
