Lucian Ban
Lucian Ban (born 1969) is a Romanian-American jazz pianist. Biography Raised in the tiny farming village of Teaca (Transylvania, Romania), Ban grew up listening to folk songs performed at weddings, birthdays, holidays, and other celebrations. At the age of seven, he moved to Cluj, where he started classical piano and composition training. He studied composition at Bucharest Music Academy from 1992 to 1995. He established the group Jazz Unit in 1995 and released two albums as a leader for Green Records in Romania. In 1999 he moved to New York City, where he studied for two years at New School University. His American debut album, ''Somethin' Holy'', in duet with baritone saxophonist Alex Harding was followed by the albums ''Premonition'' (2003), ''Tuba Project'' (featuring Bob Stewart, 2006) and ''Playground'' (featuring Jorge Sylvester, 2006). Teodora Enache
Teodora Enache-Brody (30 September 1967, Onești) is a Romanian jazz singer, songwriter and lyricist. She is considered one of the best Romanian jazz vocalists. Teodora Enache studied mathematics at Alexandru Ioan Cuza University in Iași graduating with honors in 1991, but decided to move to music professionally. Eugen Gondi (b. 1947, in Timișoara) is a Romanian-born jazz drummer. He graduated from the Arts Middle School in his hometown. He started his musical career by playing with the "Paul Weiner Free Jazz" trio. He has played with many famous Romanian jazz players, like Marius Popp, Johnny Răducanu, Garbis Dedeian, Radu Goldiş, Pedro Negrescu, Dan Mândrilă, Jan Jankeje, Liviu Butoi. For a time, in 1974, he was the drummer of rock band Transsylvania Phoenix. He is a former member of Mircea Florian's concept-band '' Ceata Melopoică''. János Kőrössy
János Kőrössy (26 December 1926 – 21 January 2013) was a Romanian jazz musician of Hungarian descent. He was a piano player, composer and arranger. He was born to an ethnic Hungarian family in Cluj. His first teacher was pianist and conductor Teodor Cosma, of whom he said, "I owe him everything, and for me the beginning is everything, the rest comes by itself."Grid Modorcea, "Recitalul lui Jancsy Kőrössy", ''Tricolorul'', no. 848, 8 January 2007. Kőrössy was noted for combining the musical language typical of jazz with elements of local folk music, a trend referred to as ethno jazz. Florin Niculescu
Florin Niculescu (born February 8, 1967 in Bucharest) is a Romanian violinist of Romani (Gypsy) ethnicity. Family background and education Niculescu was born into a family of educated ''lăutari''. Everybody in his family was involved in music: his father and his uncle were violinists, his mother a pianist and his sister a cellist. He received his first violin lessons from his father, with whom he started to study seriously when he was 4–5 years old. At 6 he enrolled at the Dinu Lipatti Music School and then at George Enescu Music High School where he was a first prize student. He played with his father at weddings and celebrations and developed his improvisation skills. When he was about 13 he heard violinist Stéphane Grappelli, who would become his idol and jazz his main attraction. Anca Parghel
Anca Parghel (September 16, 1957– December 5, 2008) was a Romanian jazz singer, composer, arranger, pianist, choir conductor, and music teacher. As a jazz vocalist, she excelled in scat, vocal percussion, and improvisation. Her voice had a four octave range, this being one of the reasons she was compared to Yma Sumac in the Romanian music press. She had an exceptional ability to interpret songs in English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, or Portuguese. Biography Early years Born in Câmpulung Moldovenesc, Suceava County, Communist Romania, to a poor family, she began singing at the age of three and performed onstage as a prodigy child. Marius Popp
Marius Popp (21 September 1935, in Sibiu – 8 November 2016) was a Romanian jazz pianist and composer. Popp, who graduated from the Institute of Architecture Ion Mincu in Bucharest, studied with Maricica Neagu (piano), Ana Severa Benţia (piano), Alexandru Paşcanu (musical theory, solfège, harmony), and Corneliu Gheorghiu (piano). Musical activity He has participated in many jazz festivals: Ploiești, Sibiu, San Sebastián, Ljubliana, Prague, Warsaw, Debrecen, Nagykanizsa, Mannheim, Göttingen, Tel Aviv, Russe, Frankfurt am Main, Vienna, Munich, Gărâna, etc. He played with Lionel Hampton when the latter had a concert in București (1971). Johnny Răducanu
Johnny Răducanu (born Răducan Crețu; 1 December 1931 – 19 September 2011) was a Romanian jazz pianist of Romani people, Romani ethnic background, whose family has a long musical tradition dating back to the 17th century. He was born in Brăila and started playing the double bass at the age of 19 before switching to piano. During his musical career, some of his many collaborations outside Romania were those with Art Farmer (trumpet) and Slide Hampton (trombone), and Friedrich Gulda (piano). In 1987, Răducanu received an honorary membership in the Louis Armstrong Academy in New Orleans. He was the founder of the Romanian Jazz school, and during a musical career spanning over half a century, he discovered, nurtured and trained several generations of Romanian jazz musicians. Harry Tavitian
Harry Tavitian (born 11 August 1952) is a Romanian jazz pianist and singer, whose style covers free-jazz, blues, ethno-jazz and avant-garde. Tavitian was born in Constanța to Armenian parents. After attending the Mircea cel Bătrân High School in his native city, he graduated from the Academy of Music in Bucharest. He came to prominence in 1978–1987, when he set up a jazz club, organizing recordings and listening sessions where he presented albums by some of the world's most prominent jazzmen. The club was hosted by Constanța Library, where he was working at the time. He plays piano solo, as well as with the Orient Express septet and with the Black Sea Orchestra. Mircea Tiberian (born May 4, 1955 in Cluj, Romania) is a jazz musician and professor of music at the National University of Music in Bucharest. He coordinates the Jazz Department, which he set up in 1991.
