Rogers Heights is an unincorporated community in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. History The Rogers Heights subdivision is bounded on the north by 1950s-era subdivisions, on the south and east by Bladensburg, and on the west by Edmonston. Named after one of the former owners of the land tract, Rogers Heights was developed between 1938 and 1952. Two factors contributed largely to the selection of this tract for development; roadways and sewers. The subdivision was located along or close to major roadways. Rogers Heights is located along Edmonston Avenue, a north-south route later rebuilt as Kenilworth Avenue. This road gave residents access to Bladensburg and the Bladensburg Road into the District of Columbia. Residents could also travel west on Decatur Street to the growing center of Hyattsville and access U.S. Route 1. History Originally called Garrison's Landing, Bladensburg was renamed in honor of Thomas Bladen, governor of Maryland, 1742–1747. Bladensburg was established in 1742 as a regional commercial center by an act of the Maryland General Assembly. The act also authorized the town commissioners to purchase of land to be laid out in lots. The act required that a house covering at least of ground with a brick or stone chimney be constructed within 18 months of the sale of the lot. As of 6 June 1746, only 18 of the lots had been improved according to the stipulations of the act. Elizabeth Seton High School is a private school, private, all-girls Roman Catholic high school in Bladensburg, Maryland, United States. It is located in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Washington. Elizabeth Seton High School was established on March 15, 1957, and opened with an enrollment of 138 freshmen and a faculty of six Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul, Daughters of Charity in September 1959. Hyattsville is a city in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States, and also a close, urban suburb of Washington, D.C. The population was 21,187 at the 2020 United States Census. History Before Europeans reached the area, the upper Anacostia River was home to Nacotchtank/Anaquashtank people, a Piscataway-speaking Algonquian peoples who lived throughout what is now the Washington, D.C. area. European encroachment and diseases decimated their population and by the 1680s the Nacotchtank/Anaquashtank had largely moved away and merged with other tribes. Maryland Route 201 (MD 201) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Maryland. Known for most of its length as Kenilworth Avenue, the highway runs from the District of Columbia boundary in Tuxedo, where the highway continues south as District of Columbia Route 295 (DC 295), north to MD 212 in Beltsville. Edmonston is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. As of the 2010 census, the town population was 1,445. The community is located from Washington, D.C. Edmonston's ZIP code is 20781. History The area of present-day Edmonston probably acquired its name from Captain James Edmonston, a member of a prominent Bladensburg, Maryland, family. He was called "Captain" because he owned a large ship. In 1742, he paid five shillings for a piece of land upon which the town of Edmonston eventually developed.
