Roger Jaar
Roger Jaar is a Haitian businessman with operations largely in the Caribbean and Quebec. Biography Jaar was born in Fort-de-France, Martinique, to a family of Arab-Palestinian descent from Bethlehem, but moved to Haiti at a young age. In 1983, Roger and his brother Raymond Jaar bought the Brasserie de la Couronne, one of the oldest soft drink companies in Haiti and supplier of the popular local drink, Cola Couronne. After the 1991 Haitian coup d'état of Raoul Cédras, Jaar left Haiti to pursue investments abroad. Initially he considered opening a brewery in Miami; however, he decided to open it in Quebec instead. Raoul Cédras
Joseph Raoul Cédras (born July 9, 1949) is a Haitian former military officer who was the ''de facto'' ruler of Haiti from 1991 to 1994. Les Brasseurs RJ is a brewery located in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The company was founded in 1998 by Roger Jaar from the merger of three microbreweries: Les Brasseurs GMT, La Brasserie Le Cheval Blanc and Les Brasseurs de l'Anse. Current annual production capacity is over 125,000 hL; they claim to be the largest microbrewery in Quebec. They currently employ 450 people, including employees at the head office in Montreal, a distribution centre in Quebec City, and a brewery in l'Anse St-Jean that fills beer kegs. 1991 Haitian Coup D'état
The 1991 Haitian coup d'état took place on 29 September 1991, when President Jean-Bertrand Aristide, elected eight months earlier in the 1990–91 Haitian general election, was deposed by the Armed Forces of Haiti. Haitian military officers, primarily Army General Raoul Cédras, Army Chief of Staff Philippe Biamby and Chief of the National Police, Michel François led the coup. Aristide was sent into exile, his life only saved by the intervention of US, French and Venezuelan diplomats. Aristide would later return to power in 1994. Cola Couronne (french: crown cola), is the oldest manufactured soft drink from Haiti by Brasserie de la Couronne S.A. It is arguably the country's most well-liked soda, as it is a staple beverage for Haitians and those abroad. In Haiti, Cola Couronne is sold in tall glass bottles or plastic bottles, as the amount of aluminum required to can the beverage does not exist in Haiti. However, canned Cola Couronne is produced in its U.S. plant in Miami, called Universal Beverages, LLC. As a result, cans are readily available in South Florida and other parts of the U.S. and Canada with a sizable population of Haitians, such as Montreal. In the Dominican Republic Cola Couronne is produced by the Coca-Cola company in Santo Domingo. Each can of Couronne has 120 calories and 31 grams of sugar. Brasserie De La Couronne
Brasserie de la Couronne, S.A., is a carbonated soft drink manufacturer and the licensed bottler for the Coca-Cola Company in Haiti. It makes the popular Cola Couronne Fruit Champagne and recently added Diète Couronne Fruit Champagne, Couronne Limonade, and Diète Couronne Limonade. It bottles Coca-Cola, Sprite, Fanta, and Gladiator for the Coca-Cola Company. History Brasserie de la Couronne was founded in 1924 and, three years later, the relationship with Coca-Cola started in 1927. It was acquired by Richard J. Forgham in the early 1950s and in turn sold to brothers Roger and Raymond Jaar in 1983. In 1986, the plant was then moved from its downtown Port-au-Prince location to a 33-acre site.
