Rodolfo González Rissotto
Rodolfo González Rissotto (October 7, 1949 – March 28, 2020) was a Uruguayan professor, historian and politician affiliated with the National Party. During the presidency of Luis Alberto Lacalle, he was the Director of Education at the Ministry of Education and Culture. Near the end of the term, in February 1995, he briefly held the title of Minister of National Defense. From 1996 through 2010, he was Minister at Uruguay's Electoral Court. He wrote a book, ''Women and Politics in Uruguay.'' He also did work in electoral theory. His work included "Direct Democracy: The Case of Uruguay," which examines the referendum as a political instrument. Luis Alberto Lacalle
Luis Alberto Lacalle de Herrera (; ''Lacalle'' locally or ; born 13 July 1941) is a Uruguayan politician and lawyer who served as the 36th president of Uruguay from 1990 to 1995. A member of the National Party, he previously served as National Representative from 1972 to 1973, and as Senator of the Republic from 1985 to 1990. Lacalle was born and raised in Montevideo. He is the grandson of Luis Alberto de Herrera who led the National Party and founded one of its most prominent sectors. He attended the Jesuit Colegio Seminario and graduated from the University of the Republic in 1964 with a law degree. In his youth he worked as a journalist in some media outlets. Electoral Court (Uruguay)
The Electoral Court of Uruguay () is the autonomous body which oversees the implementation of electioneering process, such as elections, referendums on laws and constitutional plebiscites in the Oriental Republic of Uruguay. Based in Ciudad Vieja, Montevideo, it was created on January 9, 1924. Section XVIII of the Constitution of the Republic regulates the Electoral Justice of the country, and according to Article 322 to the Electoral Court is assigned to act in all matters relating to electoral acts or procedures; to exercise directive, disciplinary, advisory, and economic supervision over electoral organs; and to render final decision on all appeals and claims that may arise and act as judge of the elections to all elective offices, and of plebiscites and referendum. 2020 Coronavirus Pandemic In Uruguay
The COVID-19 pandemic in Uruguay has resulted in confirmed cases of COVID-19 and deaths. The first cases in Uruguay were reported on 13 March 2020 by the Ministry of Public Health. The early cases were imported from Italy and Spain, with some local transmissions. The majority of early cases were traced to a wedding with 500 people in attendance in Montevideo, attended by a Uruguayan fashion designer who returned from Spain and later tested positive. Various containment measures were introduced in mid-March, and major restrictions on movement followed in late March. Uruguay is one of the few countries in Latin America to have been able to avoid large outbreaks for a considerable amount of time due to their closing of borders with neighboring countries.
