The Rockhampton Museum of Art (RMOA) is an art museum located at 212-214 Quay Street, Rockhampton City, Queensland, Australia. It was officially opened on 25 February 2022 by Queensland premier Annastacia Palaszczuk, federal Capricornia MP Michelle Landry and Rockhampton mayor Tony Williams. The Rockhampton Museum of Art is the largest regional art gallery in Queensland. Summary Construction The Rockhampton Museum of Art fronts the Fitzroy River (Queensland), Fitzroy River and is situated between Customs House, Rockhampton, Customs House at 208 Quay Street and the commercial building at 220 Quay Street which houses the studios of local radio station 4RO. The large three-storey building is six times larger than its predecessor, the former Rockhampton Art Gallery at 96 Victoria Parade which was opened in 1979. The Rockhampton Customs House is a heritage-listed customs house at 208 Quay Street, Rockhampton, Rockhampton Region, Queensland, Australia. It was built from 1899 to 1900 by Caskie and Thompson. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 7 February 2005. History The Rockhampton Customs House was constructed in 1899 as the third Customs House in Rockhampton. It is one of a group of Customs Houses built in Queensland at the turn of the century to the design of innovative and skilful architects of the Public Works Department. Leeanne Margaret Enoch is an Australian politician currently serving as the Minister for Communities and Housing and Minister for the Arts and Digital Economy of Queensland. Anthelme Thozet (25 May 1826 – 31 May 1878) was a French-Australian botanist and ethnographer. Early life He was born 25 May 1826 in Chegnieu-la-Balme (Register of Contrevoz), and fled Calais for London (giving his profession as engineer) in September 1854 as a political refugee following the 1848 French revolution. He migrated to New South Wales Australia in late 1854/early 1855 as part of a French gold digging expedition to Bathurst. He then moved to Sydney in early 1856 where he worked as a clerk at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney before being drawn to Rockhampton, Queensland by the Canoona gold rush. While living in Sydney he met Maria Isabella Berthold, a German immigrant, and they had a son, Auguste who was born on 7 July 1857. Margaret Fay Strelow is an Australian politician who served as the Mayor of the Rockhampton Region from April 2012 to November 2020.
