Rock Horned Lizard
The rock horned lizard (''Phrynosoma ditmarsi''), also known Common name, commonly as Ditmars' horned lizard and ''camaleón de roca'' in Mexican Spanish, is a species of lizard in the Family (biology), family Phrynosomatidae. The species is Endemism, endemic to the Mexican state of Sonora, in northern Mexico, south of the Arizona border. Bearing the shortest Horn (anatomy), horns of all the horned lizards, it lives in thorn-scrub and deciduous Sinaloan woodlands. The rock horned lizard was "lost" to science for about 65 years. It has a unique habitat preference and limited distribution. It also had a very imprecise holotype locality record which made it difficult to locate. Leonhard Hess Stejneger (30 October 1851 – 28 February 1943) was a Norwegian-born American ornithologist, herpetologist and zoologist. Stejneger specialized in vertebrate natural history studies. Charles Herbert Lowe
Charles Herbert Lowe, Jr. (April 16, 1920 – September 13, 2002) was an American biologist and herpetologist. Lowe was born in Los Angeles, California. After college he served during World War II as a U.S. Navy Ensign (rank), Ensign in the Pacific. In 1946, he enrolled at UCLA, where he received a Doctor of Philosophy, Ph.D. in 1950. He then went to the University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona, where he became a professor of ecology and evolutionary biology. His interests focused on the desert Fauna (animals), fauna, especially of the Sonoran Desert. He did many extensive studies, and in 1964 published ''The Vertebrates of Arizona''. His research in the 1960s established the parthenogenesis, parthenogenetic reproduction of many whiptail lizard species, and also discovered that the desert pupfish can tolerate temperatures up to 44 °C (112 °F) and extremely low oxygen levels.
