They are elected every six months by the Grand and General Council, the country's legislative body. Normally the Regents are chosen from opposing parties and they serve a six-month term. Serravalle (San Marino)
Serravalle is a ''castello'' in northern San Marino. With a population of 10,878 inhabitants (of which 2,000 are of foreign origin) and an area of 10.53 km2, it is not only the most densely populated municipality in San Marino, but it also contains its largest settlement ( Dogana). Serravalle is located on the edge of the Apennine Mountains. Geography The town borders on Sammarinese municipalities of Domagnano and Borgo Maggiore and the Italian municipalities Verucchio, Rimini and Coriano. 2012 Sammarinese General Election
General elections were held in San Marino on 11 November 2012. The 60 seats in the Grand and General Council were up for grabs. The elections were held using the majority bonus system. The previous election, held in 2008, provided the Sammarinese Christian Democratic Party with the largest single parliamentary group. The Party of Socialists and Democrats, although winning more votes than the former, became the main opposition party. However, for the 2012 elections, the two parties decided to run together, under the banner of the coalition San Marino Common Good. They were joined by the Popular Alliance. History From the fifth century San Marino was ruled by an assembly composed by all the family heads known as the Arengo. However, as population grew, such a body became more and more dysfunctional, with its functioning being crippled by feuds between families. While the exact timing is unknown, there is historical evidence that by the early 13th century the citizens of San Marino elected an assembly called Council of the LX, which was also known as the Grand and General Council. The Sammarinese Christian Democratic Party ( it, Partito Democratico Cristiano Sammarinese, PDCS) is a Christian-democratic political party in San Marino. The PDCS is an observer member of the European People's Party (EPP), having joined the EPP in 1993. Its Italian counterpart was the now-dissolved Christian Democracy.
