Roberto Rivera Ruiz De Porras
Roberto Rivera Ruiz de Porras (born October 28, 1950) is a Puerto Rican politician affiliated with the Popular Democratic Party (PPD). He has been a member of the Puerto Rico House of Representatives since 2001 representing District 39. Since 2013, he is serving as Speaker pro tempore of the House of Representatives of Puerto Rico. Early years and studies Roberto Rivera Ruiz de Porras was born in Ponce on October 28, 1950. He studied at the Colegio San Juan Bosco in the Barrio Cantera. Rivera Ruiz de Porras completed a degree in Business Management from Caribbean University. Professional career Rivera worked for 29 years in the banking industry. Political career Rivera began his political career when he became a member of the Municipal Assembly of Carolina in 1989. The President of the House of Representatives of Puerto Rico —commonly called the Speaker of the House ( es, Presidente de la Cámara de Representantes)— is the highest-ranking officer and the presiding officer of the House of Representatives of Puerto Rico. The 2012 Puerto Rican general elections were held on Tuesday, November 6, 2012 to elect the officials of the Puerto Rican government that would serve for the next four years, most notably the Governor of Puerto Rico. A status referendum was held on the same date. The 2008 Puerto Rican general elections were held on Tuesday, November 4, 2008 to elect the officials of the Government of Puerto Rico that would serve for the next four years, most notably the Governor of Puerto Rico. The election was won by incumbent Resident Commissioner of Puerto Rico Luis Fortuño (from the New Progressive Party), who defeated the incumbent Governor, Aníbal Acevedo Vilá (from the Popular Democratic Party). Fortuño received 1,025,965 votes, and Acevedo Vilá 801,071. Also, most of the other positions were won by the candidates of the New Progressive Party, who ended up with a majority of seats in the Senate and the House of Representatives.
