Robert Treboux
Robert Marcel Tréboux (October 21, 1924 Vinzier - August 22, 2012), was one of the last surviving influential chefs and restaurateurs to come to New York City from France to work at Le Pavillon. From 1985 to his death in 2012, he owned the restaurant Le Veau d'Or, which was profiled in a 2009 episode of '' Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations''. With his death, '' Time'' declared the era of ''la cuisine classique'' to be over. Career He was sixteen when he went to work as a waiter at his cousin's hotel in Paris before going to work at La Selle, also in Paris and Claridge's in London. At some point, he was promoted to captain. On board the French liner Liberté, Treboux met a New York judge who sponsored him to come to the United States where he worked at Pavillon for five years. Le Pavillon (Henri Soulé Restaurant)
Le Pavillon was a New York City restaurant that defined French food in the United States from 1941 to 1966. The restaurant started as the ''Le Restaurant du Pavillon de France'' at the 1939 New York World's Fair run by Henri Soulé (1904–1966). When World War II began, Soulé and the Pavillon chef Pierre Franey stayed in the United States as war refugees. The restaurant formally opened on October 15, 1941, at 5 East 55th Street on Fifth Avenue, across the street from the St. Regis New York. In 1957, Le Pavillon moved to the Ritz Tower on Park Avenue and 57th Street. Soulé died in 1966, and Le Pavillon closed in 1971. In his autobiography, Jacques Pépin describes how he was first employed at Le Pavilion after emigrating to the US in 1959. Le Veau D'Or
Le Veau d'Or is a restaurant on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, serving traditional French cuisine since 1937. As of 2015, it was considered the oldest French bistro in New York City. Since 2019, Riad Nasr and Lee Hanson (of the restaurant Frenchette) have been the owners, having bought Le Veau d'Or from Catherine Treboux, the daughter of the longtime owner, Robert Treboux, who bought the restaurant in 1985 and died in 2012. Claridge's
Claridge's is a 5-star hotel at the corner of Brook Street and Davies Street in Mayfair, London. It has long-standing connections with royalty that have led to it sometimes being referred to as an "annexe to Buckingham Palace". Claridge's Hotel is owned and managed by Maybourne Hotel Group. History Founding Claridge's was founded in 1812 as Mivart's Hotel, in a conventional London terraced house, and it grew by expanding into neighbouring houses. In 1854, the founder (the father of biologist St. George Jackson Mivart) sold the hotel to a Mr and Mrs Claridge, who owned a smaller hotel next door. They combined the two operations, and after trading for a time as "Mivart's late Claridge's", they settled on the current name. The reputation of the hotel was confirmed in 1860 when Empress Eugenie made an extended visit and entertained Queen Victoria at the hotel.
