Robert Treat Hotel
The Robert Treat Center is an office and hotel complex in Newark, New Jersey, named for Robert Treat, who founded the city in 1666. One building originally opened as the Robert Treat Hotel in 1916. The landmark was later converted to an office building after the construction of a newer hotel next to it. The adjacent buildings are located at Military Park near the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, One Theater Square and New Jersey Historical Society. A portrait of Robert Treat was prominently placed over the fireplace mantle. In 1933, the Hotel was operated by Niagara Falls businessman Frank A. Dudley and the United Hotels Company. The building was purchased in 1987 by The Berger Organization, which has also renovated some of the city's other commercial landmarks, such as the Firemen's Insurance Company Home Office Building and Military Park Building. Military Park Building
The Military Park Building in Newark, New Jersey is one of the earliest skyscrapers built downtown. Designed by the architectural firm Polhemus & Coffin of New York, it was the tallest building in New Jersey upon its completion in 1926 until being surpassed in 1930 by the Eleven 80. The landmark takes its name from nearby Military Park. Also nearby are some of the city's most prominent institutions such as Newark Museum, New Jersey Performing Arts Center, Newark Public Library, New Jersey Historical Society and Rutgers University. Anton Kaufman (1883 – January 1, 1943) was a reporter for the '' Berliner Morgen-Zeitung'' and later the publisher of the '' Detroit Daily Chronicle'' and the ''Newark Jewish Chronicle''. He was blind. Biography Kaufman was born in 1883, in Austria or Germany. As a young man, he worked as a reporter for the '' Berliner Morgen-Zeitung''. He immigrated to Detroit, Michigan, in 1905. He met and married Fannie Newman in Detroit on March 14, 1909, and had four children: Theodore Newman Kaufman, Herbert Kaufman, Julian Kaufman, and Leonard Kaufman. He became a citizen in 1910. He became the publisher of '' The Detroit Daily Chronicle'' in 1914, and when that publication failed, he moved to Newark, New Jersey, in 1921 and became the publisher of the ''Newark Jewish Chronicle''. The Home Office Building is located adjacent to Military Park at 10 Park Place in Newark, Essex County, New Jersey, United States. The building was built in 1928 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places on June 17, 1982. The building is one of two existing structures in downtown Newark commissioned by the Firemen's Insurance Company, an insurance company founded in 1855, to house its offices. Guilbert and Betelle was an architecture firm formed as a partnership of Ernest F. Guilbert and James Oscar Betelle. The firm specialized in design of schools on the East Coast of the United States, with an emphasis on the " Collegiate Gothic" style. Betelle took over the firm after Guilbert died in 1916, and oversaw design of hundreds of schools, including Greenwich High School in Greenwich, Connecticut and the Radburn School in Fair Lawn, New Jersey, both of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
