Robert Simpson (brewer)
Robert Simpson was a Canadian brewer and politician who served as the first mayor of Barrie from 1871 to 1872, and again as its third mayor in 1876. He also founded the Simcoe Steam Brewery, and the 21st-century Robert Simpson Brewing Company (now The Flying Monkeys Craft Brewery) was named in his honour. Prior to becoming mayor, the head of the governing body for Barrie was known as the reeve of Barrie. Simpson first served as the fifth reeve from 1858 to 1859, and was succeeded by Thomas David McConkey. Simpson later succeeded the seventh and final reeve, William Davis Ardagh William Davis Ardagh (March 21, 1828 – April 16, 1893) was an Ontario lawyer, judge and political figure. Mayor
In many countries, a mayor is the highest-ranking official in a municipal government such as that of a city or a town. Worldwide, there is a wide variance in local laws and customs regarding the powers and responsibilities of a mayor as well as the means by which a mayor is elected or otherwise mandated. Barrie
Barrie is a city in Southern Ontario, Canada, about north of Toronto. The city is within Simcoe County and located along the shores of Kempenfelt Bay, the western arm of Lake Simcoe. Although physically in Simcoe County, Barrie is politically independent. The city is part of the extended urban area in southern Ontario known as the Greater Golden Horseshoe. As of the 2021 census, the city's population was 147,829, while the census metropolitan area had a population of 212,667 residents. The area was first settled during the War of 1812 as a supply depot for British forces, and Barrie was named after Sir Robert Barrie. Thomas David McConkey
Thomas David McConkey (July 29, 1815 – February 21, 1890) was an Ontario businessman and political figure. He represented Simcoe North in the House of Commons of Canada as a Liberal member from 1867 to 1872. He was born in County Tyrone, Ireland in 1815, the son of Thomas McConkey, and came to Innisfil Township in Upper Canada with his family in 1828. William Davis Ardagh
William Davis Ardagh (March 21, 1828 – April 16, 1893) was an Ontario lawyer, judge and political figure. He represented Simcoe North in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1871 to 1874. He was born in County Tipperary in Ireland in 1828 and grew up in County Kilkenny. He came to Barrie in Canada West in 1848, articled in law and was called to the bar in 1855. He entered the practice of law in Toronto with John Willoughby Crawford. He served as deputy judge in Simcoe County in 1882 and was reeve and later mayor of Barrie. He moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba, where he served as Deputy Attorney-General and County Court judge. He also served on the Board of Police Commissioners for Winnipeg.
