Robert Lyon (politician)
Robert Lyon (July 6, 1829 - March 21, 1888) was a lawyer, politician and judge in the County of Carleton in eastern Ontario. He was mayor of Ottawa in 1867 and a Liberal member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1867 to 1871.Dave Mullington "Chain of Office: Biographic Sketches of Ottawa's Mayors (1847-1948)" (Renfrew, Ontario: General Store Publishing House, 2005) His father, George Lyon, was a Scottish captain in the British army, who settled in Richmond, Ontario. His oldest brother was George Byron Lyon, another mayor of Ottawa. Robert was born in the village of Richmond in 1829. He studied law and was called to the bar in 1853. He began practicing law in Ottawa in 1856. He became an alderman and later mayor. Lyon also represented Carleton in the Ontario legislature from 1867 to 1871. A Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) is an elected member of the Legislative Assembly of the Canadian province of Ontario. Elsewhere in Canada, the titular designation "Member of Provincial Parliament" has also been used to refer to members of the Legislative Assembly of Lower Canada from 1791 to 1838, and to members of the Legislative Assembly of Quebec from 1955 to 1968. Downtown Ottawa is the central area of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. It is sometimes referred to as the Central Business District and contains Ottawa's financial district. Carleton (Ontario Electoral District)
Carleton is a federal electoral district in Ontario, Canada, represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1867 to 1968 and since 2015. It was represented in the Legislative Assembly of Upper Canada from 1821 to 1840 and in the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada from 1841 until 1866. The original riding was created by the British North America Act of 1867. However, the riding had existed since 1821 in the Parliament of Upper Canada and the Parliament of the Province of Canada. It originally consisted of Carleton County. In 1966, it was redistributed into the new electoral districts of Grenville—Carleton, Lanark and Renfrew, Ottawa Centre, Ottawa West and Ottawa—Carleton. Richmond, Ontario
Richmond is a suburban community, part of the Canadian capital of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Founded in 1818, it spans the Jock River, a tributary of the Rideau River. A part of the National Capital Region, Richmond is located 10kms southwest of Kanata and immediately south to the community of Stittsville. George Lyon (1790-1851)
George Lyon (1790 – 26 March 1851) was a captain in the British Army and a Canadian businessman and politician. He was born in Inverurie, Scotland in 1790. In 1806 he was commissioned Ensign in the 40th Foot and in 1809, as a lieutenant, he transferred to the 100th Foot. In November 1810, he went to Upper Canada (now Ontario with his regiment. He served with them in the War of 1812. After the regiment disbanded in 1818, he was given a land grant of 500 acres (2 km2) and settled in Richmond. He acquired additional lands when he built a grist mill and sawmill there. He also built a distillery and opened a store. He became a major in the local militia in 1843. He represented the County of Carleton in the Legislative Assembly of Upper Canada from 1833 to 1834 and in the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada from 1846 to 1847.
