Sir Robert Laidlaw KT (15 January 1856 – 3 November 1915) was a philanthropist, entrepreneur and British Liberal Party (UK), Liberal Party politician. Biography He was born on 13 January 1856, at Bonchester Bridge, Roxburghshire, the son of William Laidlaw and Agnes Purdom. He was educated at Kirkton and Denholm Parish Schools. He married Mary Eliza, d/o Captain W. Blow Collins and widow of W. L. Francis, of the India Office in 1879, and had surviving issue, three daughters - Ethel, Mildred, and Dorothy. Robert Alexander Crookston Laidlaw (8 September 1885 – 12 March 1971) was a New Zealand businessman who founded the Farmers Trading Company, one of the largest department store chains in New Zealand. He was also a Christian writer and philanthropist and a well-known lay preacher in the Open Brethren movement. Biography Laidlaw was born in Scotland. His parents emigrated to Dunedin, New Zealand, when he was a young boy. He studied at Otago Boys' High School. In Auckland he founded Laidlaw Leeds, a Sears-type mail order catalogue for rural customers. This later merged with the older Farmers Union Trading Company to become what is now Farmers Trading Company Ltd, the last remaining nationwide chain of department stores in the country. He married Lillian Watson, the sister of American preacher Henry Ironside, in 1915, and the couple settled in New Zealand. January 1910 United Kingdom General Election
The January 1910 United Kingdom general election was held from 15 January to 10 February 1910. The government called the election in the midst of a constitutional crisis caused by the rejection of the People's Budget by the Conservative-dominated House of Lords, in order to get a mandate to pass the budget. The general election resulted in a hung parliament, with the Conservative Party led by Arthur Balfour and their Liberal Unionist allies receiving the most votes, but the Liberals led by H. H. Asquith winning the most seats, returning two more MPs than the Conservatives. Asquith's government remained in power with the support of the Irish Parliamentary Party, led by John Redmond. Another general election was soon held in December. The Labour Party, led by Arthur Henderson, returned 40 MPs. Much of this apparent increase (from the 29 Labour MPs elected in 1906) came from the defection, a few years earlier, of Lib Lab MPs from the Liberal Party to Labour. Results ... Biography He was the eldest son of Sir Michael Shaw-Stewart, 7th Baronet, and Lady Octavia Grosvenor, daughter of Richard Grosvenor, 2nd Marquess of Westminster. He was educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford. He was a Captain in the 4th Battalion (Princess Louise's), the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders and Honorary Colonel of the 5/6th Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. He was unsuccessful Conservative parliamentary candidate for Stirlingshire in 1885, and was elected for East Renfrewshire in 1886, holding the seat until 1906. In 1903, he succeeded his father in the baronetcy and as Laird of Ardgowan. He was awarded the CB in the 1916 Birthday Honours and knighted in the same order in the 1933 Birthday Honours. Lieutenant-Colonel Sir John Gilmour, 2nd Baronet (27 May 1876 – 30 March 1940) was a Scottish Unionist politician. He notably served as Home Secretary from 1932 to 1935. Early life Gilmour was the son of Sir John Gilmour, 1st Baronet, chairman of the Scottish Conservative and Unionist party, who was created a baronet in 1897. His mother was Henrietta, daughter of David Gilmour of Quebec. He was educated at Trinity College, Glenalmond, the University of Edinburgh and Trinity Hall, Cambridge. Military service Gilmour was a lieutenant in the Fifeshire Volunteer Light Horse, and was among the officers of the Fife and Forfar volunteer battalions to volunteer for service in the Second Boer War. He was commissioned a lieutenant in the Imperial Yeomanry on 7 February 1900, and served in South Africa with the 20th (Fife and Forfarshire Light Horse) Company of the 6th Battalion.
