Robert Francis Catterson
Robert Francis Catterson (March 22, 1835March 30, 1914) was a doctor, Union Army officer in the American Civil War, state legislator, militia officer, U.S. Marshal, and the 30th mayor of Little Rock, Arkansas (from 1871 to 1873). During the American Civil War, he was a senior officer of the Union Army and served as a brigade commander in the Army of the Tennessee. Early life and education Catterson was born on March 22, 1835, in Marion County, Indiana. He was educated at Adrian College in Michigan and Cincinnati Medical College in Ohio, precursor to the University of Cincinnati Academic Health Center. The Mayor of Little Rock, Arkansas serves as the chief executive of the city government. Little Rock was first incorporated as a town in November 1831 and redefined as a city under a new charter in November 1835. The First Battle of Kernstown was fought on March 23, 1862, in Frederick County and Winchester, Virginia, the opening battle of Confederate Maj. Gen. Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson's campaign through the Shenandoah Valley during the American Civil War. Attempting to tie down the Union forces in the Valley, under the overall command of Maj. Gen. Nathaniel P. Banks, Jackson received incorrect intelligence that a small detachment under Col. Nathan Kimball was vulnerable, but it was in fact a full infantry division more than twice the size of Jackson's force. 14th Indiana Infantry Regiment
The 14th Indiana Infantry Regiment, later referred to as the Gallant Fourteenth, was an infantry regiment and part of the Union Army's celebrated "Gibraltar Brigade" of the Army of the Potomac during the American Civil War. Organized in May 1861 at Camp Vigo, near Terre Haute, Indiana, it was the state's first regiment organized for three years of service. The 14th Indiana served in major campaigns and battles in the Eastern Theater of the American Civil War, Eastern Theater, mostly in West Virginia, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Maryland. During its three years of service, the regiment had a total of 222 casualties (11 officers and 211 enlisted men).
