Thetford was a constituency of the British House of Commons. It elected two Members of Parliament (MPs) by the bloc vote system of election. Robert Barker (1563 – 5 April 1618) was an English politician. Biography He was the third son of John Barker, a merchant of Bildeston, Suffolk. He was educated at St John's College, Cambridge and trained for law at the Inner Temple. He was the Member of Parliament for Colchester Colchester ( ) is a city in Essex, in the East of England. It had a population of 122,000 in 2011. The demonym is Colcestrian. Colchester occupies the site of Camulodunum, the first major city in Roman Britain and its first capital. Ipswich is a constituency represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament since December 2019 by Tom Hunt of the Conservative Party. History The constituency was created as Parliamentary Borough in the fourteenth century, returning two MPs to the House of Commons of England until 1707, then to the House of Commons of Great Britain until 1800, and from 1800 to the House of Commons of the United Kingdom. Brigadier-General Sir Robert Barker, 1st Baronet, FRS (1732 – 14 September 1789) was a British Army officer who served in the Seven Years' War and politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1774 to 1780. He served as Commander-in-Chief, India between 1770 and 1773. Military career Barker was the eldest son of Robert Barker M.D., of Hammersmith, and his wife Hannah Whitehead. He went to India in 1749 and in 1757, during the Seven Years' War, commanded the artillery at the Capture of Chandannagar and at the Battle of Plassey. In 1762 he went on an expedition to Manila in the Philippines. He was knighted on 16 January 1764. Two years later he returned to India to protect the Nawab wazir of Oudh Shuja-ud-Daula. Robert Barker (19 June 1847 – 11 November 1915) was an English footballer who played for England, first in goal and later as a forward, in the first international match against Scotland. Career Barker was born in Wouldham, Kent and was educated at Marlborough College where he played both rugby and association football. After leaving school he joined Hertfordshire Rangers to concentrate on "soccer". He represented both Middlesex and Kent during his career, as well as making occasional appearances for Westminster School and Wanderers. He was selected to play in goal for England's first ever international match against Scotland on 30 November 1872. Robert Barker (1739 – 8 April 1806) was a famous painter from Kells, Co. Meath, Ireland. Biography The itinerant portrait painter Robert Barker coined the word "panorama", from Greek ''pan'' ("all") ''horama'' ("view"), in 1792 to describe his paintings of Edinburgh, Scotland, shown on a cylindrical surface, which he soon was exhibiting in London, as "The Panorama". The Barker Panaroma of Edinburgh from Calton Hill is considered to be the earliest panorama view and held within University of Edinburgh. This six piece set of engravings show a 360 degree view of the city of Edinburgh from a standing position on Calton Hill. Robert Barker (died 1745) was a British physician and inventor. He was a Fellow of the Royal Society from 1732. Barker invented both a reflecting microscope, exhibited in 1736, and "Barker's mill", a prototype reaction turbine (1743). According to James Dodson, he was a friend of Charles Labelye. He died in London, on 9 September 1745. Barker's Mill Barker's Mill, a rotating device powered by water and Newton's Third Law, is sometimes described as a 17th century invention.
