Andy Kessler Skatepark formerly Riverside Skatepark is a skatepark located in Riverside Park on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, New York City. Riverside Skatepark is notable as the first full-sized public skatepark in Manhattan, designed and built by renowned skateboarder and skatepark builder Andy Kessler. Terrain Andy Kessler Skatepark is a concrete skatepark built by California Skateparks consisting of a street plaza and a pool. It maintains a similar footprint as the original skatepark of approximately 30,000 square feet overall.The street plaza consists of stairs, ledges, rails, banks, bank to ledge and a 4 foot mini ramp.The pool is 11 foot deep in the deep end with 18" of vert, the shallow end is 6.5 feet deep. A skatepark, or skate park, is a purpose-built recreational environment made for skateboarding, BMX, scootering, wheelchairs, and aggressive inline skating. Riverside Park (Manhattan)
Riverside Park is a scenic waterfront public park in the Upper West Side, Morningside Heights, Manhattan, Morningside Heights, and Hamilton Heights, Manhattan, Hamilton Heights neighborhoods of the borough (New York City), borough of Manhattan in New York City. The park measures long and wide, running between the Hudson River/Henry Hudson Parkway and the serpentine Riverside Drive (Manhattan), Riverside Drive. Riverside Park was established by eminent domain, land condemnation in 1872 and was developed concurrently with Riverside Drive. Originally running between 72nd and 125th Streets, it was extended northward in the first decade of the 20th century. When the park was first laid out, the right-of-way of the New York Central Railroad's West Side Line blocked access to the river. A vert ramp is a form of half-pipe used in extreme sports such as vert skating, vert skateboarding and vert BMX. Vert ramps are so named because they transition from a horizontal plane (known as the flat-bottom) to a vertical section on top. The typical height of a vert ramp is to with anywhere from to of vertical on top. Vert skating ramps can be made with to of vertical while vert skateboarding ramps are made with of vertical in order for the skateboard to launch straight up into the air. This vertical section makes it easier for the riders to take off and 'catch air' on a vert ramp rather than on a half-pipe. This is because the vert at the top causes the rider to naturally go straight up into the air instead of forward and off the ramp (as is the tendency on half-pipes that don't go vertically upwards). Wallride
A wallride or wall ride is a maneuver in skateboarding in which a rider positions their skateboard parallel to a wall, putting the wheels on the side of the wall as they ride along it. The trick is noted for its particular grace. History 1970s (early innovators) The exact originator of the wallride is unknown but it's believed to have been invented in the mid-1970s. The invention of the backside wallride is credited to Rodney Mullen in 1979. NYC Skateboard Coalition
NYC Skateboard Coalition, established in 2017, is a community organization that advocates for New York City's skateparks and hosts NYC-based skateboard events. The NYC Skateboard Coalition supports the skateboarding community of New York City through hosting skate jams and skatepark clean-ups throughout the city. History Founding at Riverside Skatepark In the early 2010s, Ian Clarke, a local skater at Riverside Skatepark, learned about the history of Andy Kessler and Riverside Skatepark from Ricky Mujica. The history and significance of the skatepark made an impression on Clarke. There was a small mini-ramp at the park that was falling apart at the skatepark, reaching out to the Riverside Park Conservancy, Clarke led a permitted repair of the mini-ramp, saving it from destruction. Andy Kessler (skateboarder)
Andrew Kessler (June 11, 1961 – August 10, 2009) was a Greek-born American skateboarder, skatepark builder, and prominent member of a loose-knit collective of skateboarders and graffiti artists called the Soul Artists of Zoo York. Kessler is featured in the documentary ''Deathbowl to Downtown''. Early life Andy and his twin sister were born in Athens, Greece, adopted by an American family and raised on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, New York. He started skateboarding in the early 1970s in Central Park, on a short hill near to its West 69th Street entrance. He soon joined a group of inner city kids congregating around "the bandshell," though the scene was primarily based in the Rumsey Playfield playground directly behind Central Park's Naumburg Bandshell, inside the park at West 71st Street, the street on which Kessler was raised.
