River Mole, Surrey
The River Mole is a tributary of the River Thames in southern England. It source (river), rises in West Sussex near Gatwick Airport and flows north-west through Surrey for to the River Thames, Thames at Hampton Court Palace. The river gives its name to the Surrey district of Mole Valley. The Mole crosses the North Downs between Dorking and Leatherhead, where it cuts a steep-sided valley, known as the Mole Gap, through the chalk. Much of the catchment area lies on permeability (earth sciences), impermeable rock (including Weald Clay and London Clay), meaning that the river level responds rapidly to heavy rainfall. Box Hill, Surrey
Box Hill is a summit of the North Downs in Surrey, approximately south-west of London. It is named after the ancient Buxus sempervirens, box woodland found on the steepest west-facing chalk slopes overlooking the River Mole. The western part of the hill is owned and managed by the National Trust for Places of Historic Interest or Natural Beauty, National Trust, whilst the village of Box Hill lies on higher ground to the east. The highest point is Betchworth Clump at Ordnance Datum, above OD, although the Salomons Memorial (at 172 metres) overlooking the town of Dorking is the most popular viewpoint. Rusper is a village and civil parish in the Horsham District of West Sussex, England. It lies north of the town of Horsham and west of Crawley. The London Clay Formation is a Sediment#Shores and shallow seas, marine formation (geology), geological formation of Ypresian (early Eocene Epoch, c. 54-50 million years ago) age which outcrop, crops out in the southeast of England. Weald Clay
Weald Clay or the Weald Clay Formation is a Lower Cretaceous sedimentary rock unit underlying areas of South East England, between the North and South Downs, in an area called the Weald Basin. It is the uppermost unit of the Wealden Group of rocks within the Weald Basin, and the upper portion of the unit is equivalent in age to the exposed portion of the Wessex Formation on the Isle of Wight. It predominantly consists of thinly bedded mudstone. The un-weathered form is blue/grey, and the yellow/orange is the weathered form, it is used in brickmaking.
