Rita Ranch is a masterplanned community located in southeastern Tucson, Arizona. It is home to the Vail School District. Founded in 1903, the Vail Unified School District (often shortened to simply Vail School District) is the school district in the town of Vail, Arizona. It also serves portions of nearby Tucson, Arizona. It operates an inclusive preschool, ten elementary schools, six middle schools, and five high schools, plus the Vail Academy and High School, a K-12 school, serving a population of more than 14,000 students from preschool to twelfth grade. Vail, Arizona
Vail is a census-designated place (CDP) in Pima County, Arizona, United States. It is southeast of Tucson. The population was 10,208 at the 2010 census, up from 2484 in the 2000 census. The area is known for the nearby Colossal Cave, a large cave system, and the Rincon Mountains District of Saguaro National Park, a top tourism spot within Arizona. Vail was originally a siding and water stop on the Southern Pacific Railroad. It was located on the last section of flat land before the train tracks followed the old wagon road into the Cienega Creek bed. Vail was named after pioneer ranchers Edward and Walter Vail, who established ranches in the area in the late 19th century. Vail deeded a right of way across his ranch to the railroad. Vail owned the Vail Ranch, his brother Walter Vail owned the nearby Empire Ranch, now part of the Las Cienegas National Conservation Area. Esmond Train Wreck
The Esmond Train Wreck on January 28, 1903, 3:30 am, about east of present-day Tucson, Arizona, killed 14 people, including the engineers of both trains. The accident occurred when the eastbound ''Crescent City Express'' (No. 8) collided head-on with the westbound ''Pacific Coast Express'' (No. 7). Both trains were running late. A communication error was determined to be the cause of the wreck.
