Rising Finland
Rising Finland was a Finnish political association founded on October 5, 1940. It aimed to "nurture the Spirit of the Winter War", promote the idea of a united people, to reorganize the bourgeois party field and to create a stronger leadership and increasing personal responsibility. According to the organization, its goal was to bring together citizens around national symbols whose value was "perceived by all our people in the great trials of the 1939-1940 War of Independence". The organization was founded by Vilho Helanen, director of the extremist nationalist and far-right Academic Karelia Society (AKS), who also served as chairman of the board. Finnish Nationalism
Nationalism was a central force in the history of Finland for the last two centuries. The Finnish national awakening in the mid-19th century was the result of members of the Swedish-speaking upper classes deliberately choosing to promote Finnish culture and language as a means of nation building—i.e. to establish a feeling of unity between all people in Finland including (and not of least importance) between the ruling elite and the ruled peasantry. The publication in 1835 of the Finnish national epic, the ''Kalevala'', a collection of traditional myths and legends which is the folklore common to the Finns and to the Karelian people (the Finnic Russian Orthodox people who inhabit the Lake Ladoga-region of eastern Finland and present-day NW Russia), stirred the nationalism that later led to Finland's independence from Russia. Veli Merikoski
Veli Kaarlo Merikoski (2 January 1905 in Pyhtää – 28 January 1982 in Helsinki) was a professor at the University of Helsinki and once the Minister for Foreign Affairs representing People's Party. Merikoski worked as an associate professor of administrative courts in the University of Helsinki 1937–1941. From 1941 to 1970 he was a professor. He was also a chancellor in the Turku School of Economics and a member in the Permanent Court of Arbitration in the Hague. Kekkonen appointed Merikoski with the task to form a new government following the 1962 parliamentary elections. However, Merikoski was not successful in this task, and Ahti Karjalainen replaced him.
