Rikets Tilstand
''Rikets tilstand'' ("State of the Realm") is a Norwegian investigative documentary series that aired on TV 2 from 1999 to 2002. The host was Gerhard Helskog, former host of '' Dokument 2''. The series premiered on 30 September 1999. ''Rikets tilstand'' won a SKUP diploma and the Gullruten award for best documentary for the two-part episode '' Norske jenter omskjæres'' (2000), about Norwegian Muslim girls being subjected to female genital mutilation with the secret approval of imams. The series became subject to a scandal in 2002 after an episode made unsubstantiated allegations of doping in the Norwegian national skiing team. The series was also tarnished for sparking a moral panic following an episode in 2001 alleging the now-discredited link between the MMR vaccine and autism. ''Nettavisen'' is a Norwegian online newspaper, launched in 1996 as the first online-only newspaper in Norway. The current editor is Gunnar Stavrum. As of 2015 it was one of Norway's most popular news websites. Progress Party (Norway)
The Progress Party ( nb, Fremskrittspartiet; nn, Framstegspartiet; se, Ovddádusbellodat), commonly abbreviated as FrP, is a right-wing political party in Norway. The FrP has traditionally self-identified as classical-liberal and as a libertarian party but is generally positioned to the right of the Conservative Party, and is considered the most right-wing party to be represented in parliament. Jan Simonsen
Jan Simonsen (3 March 1953 – 12 August 2019) was a Norwegian writer, freelance journalist and politician. He was a member of parliament from 1989 to 2005. He was a member of the Progress Party until he was expelled from the party in 2001. From 2003 to 2004 he was deputy leader of the Democrats party. Since then he largely withdrew from party politics to focus on his writing and journalism. He wrote a blog with frequent issues revolving around immigration, multiculturalism, Israel, Islam, politics and foreign affairs. MMR Vaccine Controversy
Claims of a link between the MMR vaccine and autism have been extensively investigated and found to be false. The link was first suggested in the early 1990s and came to public notice largely as a result of the 1998 ''Lancet'' MMR autism fraud, characterised as "perhaps the most damaging medical hoax of the last 100 years". The fraudulent research paper authored by Andrew Wakefield and published in ''The Lancet'' claimed to link the vaccine to colitis and autism spectrum disorders. The paper was retracted in 2010 but is still cited by anti-vaccinationists. The claims in the paper were widely reported, leading to a sharp drop in vaccination rates in the UK and Ireland. Promotion of the claimed link, which continues in anti-vaccination propaganda despite being refuted, has led to an increase in the incidence of measles and mumps, resulting in deaths and serious permanent injuries. Moral Panic
A moral panic is a widespread feeling of fear, often an irrational one, that some evil person or thing threatens the values, interests, or well-being of a community or society. It is "the process of arousing social concern over an issue", usually perpetuated by moral entrepreneurs and the mass media, and exacerbated by politicians and lawmakers. Stanley Cohen, who developed the term, states that moral panic happens when "a condition, episode, person or group of persons emerges to become defined as a threat to societal values and interests". While the issues identified may be real, the claims "exaggerate the seriousness, extent, typicality and/or inevitability of harm".
