Rijnsaterwoude
Rijnsaterwoude is a village in the Dutch province of South Holland. It is located about 6 km north of the town of Alphen aan den Rijn, in the municipality of Kaag en Braassem. History The village was first mentioned in the first half of the 11th century as Rinsaterwalt, and means "forest of people who live along the (Oude) Rijn". Rijnsaterwoude developed as a peat excavation settlement in the Middle Ages along the . The Dutch Reformed church Woudse Dom is a single aisled church with built-in tower. The choir was built around 1500. The nave and tower were rebuilt are being damaged by a storm in 1552. The church was restored between 1956 and 1958. The ''polder'' mill De Geestmolen was built in 1707. In 1960, the windmill sail broke and an electro motor was installed. In 1963, it was sold and restored in 1964. The wind mill is occasionally in service. Rijnsaterwoude was home to 561 people in 1840. It was a separate municipality until 1991, when it became part of Jacobswoude. ... Kaag en Braassem () is a municipality in the western Netherlands, in the province of South Holland. It was formed on 1 January 2009, through the merger of Alkemade and Jacobswoude. Jacobswoude
Jacobswoude () is a former municipality in the western Netherlands, in the province of South Holland, now part of municipality Kaag en Braassem. Before the merger with Alkemade, the municipality covered an area of 41.37 km² (25.71 mile²) of which 4.88 km² (3.03 mile²) is water, mainly the lakes Braassemermeer and Wijde Aa. It consisted of the communities Bilderdam, Hoogmade, Leimuiden, Rijnsaterwoude, and Woubrugge, all located around the above-mentioned lakes. It had a population of 10,692 on 1 January 2004. Jacobswoude is located in the center of the ''Groene Hart'' (Green Heart), the slightly less densely populated center area of the Randstad. Oude Rijn (Utrecht And South Holland)
The Oude Rijn (Old Rhine) is a branch of the Rhine delta in the Dutch provinces of Utrecht and South Holland, starting west of Utrecht, at Harmelen and runs by a mechanical pumping station into the North Sea at Katwijk. Its present-day length is 52 kilometres. In ancient times, the river was the lower part of the main Rhine branch, forking at Batavia Island, now Betuwe, in a northern branche, Rhine and southern branche Maas. It was much broader and was influenced by sea-tides. During occupation of the Romans the river formed part of the northern border of the Roman Empire. In medieval times, river Lek became the main draining river for Rhinewater and the Old Rhine was silting.
