Rideau-Vanier
Rideau-Vanier Ward is a ward in the city of Ottawa, designated as Ward 12 and represented on Ottawa City Council. It was originally created in 1994 as a Ward on Regional Council. Prior to Ottawa's amalgamation in 2001, the Ward was partly in the former city of Vanier and partly in Ottawa, in Bruyère-Strathcona Ward, its predecessor. This ward was created in 1994 from parts of By-Rideau Ward and St. George's Ward. By-St. George's Ward covered this area from 1972 to 1980 (excluding Vanier). It was created from the merging of By Ward and St. George's Ward, and abolished when it was split into St. George's Ward and By-Rideau Ward. Stéphanie Plante
Stéphanie Plante (born July 1979) is a Canadian politician. She is currently the city councillor for Rideau-Vanier Ward on Ottawa City Council. She was first elected in the 2022 Ottawa municipal election. Early life Plante was born in Tecumseh, Ontario, the daughter of a Swiss mother and a Quebecois father. Plante attended the University of Windsor, where she received a bachelors and masters degree in political science. While attending the university, she did an internship with Liberal Party of Canada, Liberal Member of Parliament Herb Gray, resulting in a move to Ottawa in 2004, first settling in Vanier, Ontario, Vanier. After moving to Ottawa, she worked for Elections Canada, and taught municipal governance at the University of Ottawa. In 2020, as a member of the Sandy Hill Community Association, Plante began a successful campaign to re-name a neighbourhood park after local artist Annie Pootoogook who had drowned in 2016. Ottawa City Council
The Ottawa City Council (french: Conseil municipal d'Ottawa) is the governing body of the City of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. It is composed of 24 city councillors and the mayor. The mayor is elected at large, while each councillor represents wards throughout the city. Council members are elected to four-year terms, with the last election being on October 24, 2022. The council meets at Ottawa City Hall in downtown Ottawa. Much of the council's work is done in the standing committees made up of sub-groups of councillors. Mathieu Fleury
Mathieu Fleury (born September 26, 1985 in Ottawa, Ontario) is the Ottawa City Councillor of Rideau-Vanier Ward, which includes Lowertown, Sandy Hill and Vanier. He won the ward in the 2010 Ottawa municipal election, defeating the incumbent Georges Bédard in a narrow contest, the youngest City Councillor to be elected at that time. He was subsequently re-elected as the councillor in the 2014 and 2018 Ottawa municipal elections. The 2000 Ottawa municipal election was a municipal election that was held on November 13, 2000, in Ottawa. The elections were held for mayor of Ottawa, Ottawa City Council and a number of school trustees. These elections would mark the first for the newly amalgamated city, which added 10 former municipalities to Ottawa. At the time of the city elections, the amalgamation had not occurred yet; the official date of that happened on January 1, 2001. Mayoral race The race for mayor only had two major candidates, that of the Chair of the Regional Municipality of Ottawa-Carleton, Bob Chiarelli and the mayor of the City of Gloucester, Claudette Cain. Georges Bédard
Georges Bédard (born c. 1946 in Ottawa, Ontario) is a former member of Ottawa City Council representing the ward (politics), ward of Rideau-Vanier Ward, Rideau-Vanier. This ward covers Lower Town, Sandy Hill, Ottawa, Sandy Hill, and Vanier, Ontario, Vanier. Born and raised in the area Bédard currently lives in Sandy Hill. He attended Carleton University, where he obtained a degree in political science. He first became involved in local politics in the successful effort to block the construction of the King Edward Expressway. He was first elected to city council at a young age in 1974 and served on the council until 1980. During this period he was best known for his efforts at preserving heritage structures. The 2006 Ottawa municipal election was held on November 13, 2006, in Ottawa, Canada, to elect the mayor of Ottawa, Ottawa City Council and the Ottawa-Carleton Public and Catholic School Boards. The race featured three main candidates: incumbent mayor Bob Chiarelli, former Kanata councillor Alex Munter and businessman Larry O'Brien (Canadian politician), Larry O'Brien. The race began as a fight between Chiarelli and Munter, with Munter getting the edge and 2003 candidate Terry Kilrea in a close third. The 2003 Ottawa municipal election was a municipal election that was held in Ottawa to elect the city's mayor, City Council, and school trustees for the city of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The vote was held on November 10, 2003. The elections were held simultaneously with most other municipalities in Ontario. Madeleine Meilleur (born November 22, 1948) is a Canadian nurse, lawyer and former politician in Ontario, Canada. She was a Liberal member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 2003 to 2016. She represented the riding of Ottawa—Vanier. She was a cabinet minister in the governments of Dalton McGuinty and Kathleen Wynne. In May 2017, she was nominated by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to become Canada's next Official Languages Commissioner. Vanier, Ontario
Vanier, formerly Eastview, is a neighbourhood in the Rideau-Vanier Ward of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada's east end. Historically francophone and working class, the neighbourhood was a separate city until being amalgamated into Ottawa in 2001. It no longer has a majority francophone population. By 2012 its francophone population had shrunk to less than 40% from 63% in the early 1980s. The neighbourhood is located on the east bank of the Rideau River, across from the neighbourhoods of Lowertown and Sandy Hill, and just south of Rockcliffe Park, New Edinburgh, Lindenlea, and Manor Park. By Ward
By Ward was one of the five original wards represented on Ottawa City Council, created in 1855 out of parts of East Ward and Centre Ward which existed in Bytown. Originally it represented the area between Rideau Street and St. Patrick Street. Today this area is part of the By Ward Market, which is named for the historic ward. In 1952, the ward annexed Ottawa Ward to its north, encompassing the neighbourhood of Lower Town as well. The ward existed until 1972, when it merged with St. George's Ward to form By-St. George's Ward. This gave the Ward the Sandy Hill neighbourhood. In 1980, the area formerly known as By Ward split from St. George's and joined with Rideau Ward to become By-Rideau Ward. This ward existed until 1994 in which the By portion of the ward joined back with St. George's and became Bruyère-Strathcona Ward, which today is part of Rideau-Vanier Ward.
