Ricochet (documentary)
''Ricochet'' is a 1984 documentary film about the musician David Bowie. Made with Bowie’s full consent and participation, it was the second of such documentary productions following '' Cracked Actor'' from 1975. However, whereas ''Cracked Actor'' was made for television by the BBC's ''Omnibus'' strand, ''Ricochet'' was made for commercial release to the home video market.Pegg, p. 582 The documentary was filmed in the Far East at the very end of Bowie’s 1983 Serious Moonlight Tour. Directed by Gerry Troyna, the film interweaves the documentary format with travelogue, scripted narrative interludes, and some edited live performances by Bowie and his band.Pegg, p. 582 It was first released in 1984 on VHS. Background Bowie released '' Let's Dance'', his fifteenth studio album, on 14 April 1983. Within weeks both the album and a single of the same name released a month prior were in the top echelons of the UK and US charts. Not only did the album go on to be the most success ...

Let's Dance (David Bowie Song)
"Let's Dance" is a song by English singer-songwriter David Bowie, originally included as the title track of his 1983 album of the same name. Co-produced by Nile Rodgers of Chic, it was recorded in late 1982 at the Power Station in New York City. With the assistance of engineer Bob Clearmountain, Rodgers transformed the song from its folk origins to a dance number through studio effects and new musicians Bowie had yet to work with. Bowie hired then-unknown Texas guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan, who added a blues-edge. Embracing rock, funk, dance, new wave and post-disco, the full-length seven-minute track features numerous solos, including trumpet, saxophone, guitar and percussion. Several music elements, from the bassline and the breakdown, were based on Rodgers' work with Chic, while the rising vocal intros were taken from the Beatles' version of "Twist and Shout". The lyrics describe a couple dancing under the moonlight and possess a sense of peril and ominousness. Released a ...

Moss Garden (song)
Mosses are small, non-vascular flowerless plants in the taxonomic division Bryophyta (, ) ''sensu stricto''. Bryophyta ('' sensu lato'', Schimp. 1879) may also refer to the parent group bryophytes, which comprise liverworts, mosses, and hornworts. Mosses typically form dense green clumps or mats, often in damp or shady locations. The individual plants are usually composed of simple leaves that are generally only one cell thick, attached to a stem that may be branched or unbranched and has only a limited role in conducting water and nutrients. Although some species have conducting tissues, these are generally poorly developed and structurally different from similar tissue found in vascular plants. Mosses do not have seeds and after fertilisation develop sporophytes with unbranched stalks topped with single capsules containing spores. They are typically tall, though some species are much larger. ''Dawsonia'', the tallest moss in the world, can grow to in height. There are ...

"Heroes" (David Bowie Song)
"Heroes" is a song by English musician David Bowie from his 12th studio album of the same name. Co-written by Bowie and Brian Eno and co-produced by Bowie and Tony Visconti, the song was recorded in mid-1977 at Hansa Studio 2 in West Berlin. Using a G– D chord progression, the backing track was recorded fully before lyrics were written; Bowie and Eno added synthesiser overdubs while Robert Fripp contributed guitar. To record the vocal, Visconti devised a "multi-latch" system, wherein three microphones were placed at different distances from Bowie and would open when he sang loud enough. Like other album tracks, he improvised lyrics while standing at the microphone. An art rock song that builds throughout its runtime, Heroes concerns two lovers, one from East Berlin and the other from the West. Under constant fear of death, they dream they are free, swimming with dolphins. Bowie placed the title in quotation marks as an expression of irony on the otherwise romantic or tri ...

Sense Of Doubt
"Sense of Doubt" is an instrumental piece written by David Bowie in 1977 for the album '' "Heroes"''. It was the first of three instrumentals on Side Two of the original vinyl album that segued into one another, preceding " Moss Garden" and "Neuköln". Cited as "portentous" and "thoroughly foreboding",David Buckley (1999). ''Strange Fascination - David Bowie: The Definitive Story'': p.324Roy Carr & Charles Shaar Murray (1981). ''Bowie: An Illustrated Record'': pp.92-94 "Sense of Doubt" is one of the darker tracks of the album, with a descending four-note piano motif juxtaposed with "an eerie synth line like a scrap of sound from a silent expressionist-era soundtrack". Brian Eno suggested that the contrasting themes were the result of him and Bowie each following an Oblique Strategies card to guide them in the track's overdubbing, Eno's directing him to "make everything as similar as possible" and Bowie's to "emphasize differences". "Sense of Doubt" was performed on the Italian TV ...

Look Back In Anger (song)
"Look Back in Anger" is a song written by English artists David Bowie and Brian Eno for the album '' Lodger'' (1979). It concerns "a tatty 'Angel of Death'",Roy Carr & Charles Shaar Murray (1981). ''Bowie: An Illustrated Record'': p.106 and features a guitar solo by Carlos Alomar. RCA Records was unsure if America was ready for the sexual androgyny of " Boys Keep Swinging", the lead-off single from ''Lodger'' in most territories, and "Look Back in Anger" was issued instead.Nicholas Pegg (2000). ''The Complete David Bowie'': p.131 The B-side was another track from ''Lodger'' called "Repetition", a story of domestic violence. The single failed to chart. Beyond the shared title, the song has nothing to do with the John Osborne play ''Look Back in Anger''. Bowie performed the song on his 1983 Serious Moonlight Tour (it is the opening number on the ''Serious Moonlight'' film) and reworked it in the mid-1990s as a heavy rock song for the Outside, Earthling, Heathen tours. China Girl (song)
"China Girl" is a song written by Iggy Pop and David Bowie during their years in Berlin, first appearing on Pop's debut solo album ''The Idiot'' (1977). The song became more widely known when it was re-recorded by Bowie, who released it as the second single from his most commercially successful album, '' Let's Dance'' (1983). The UK single release of Bowie's version reached No. 2 for one week on 14 June 1983, while the US release reached No. 10. Original recording Paul Trynka, the author of the David Bowie biography, ''Starman'', explains the song was inspired by Iggy Pop's infatuation with Kuelan Nguyen, a Vietnamese woman, as a metaphor for his Stooges career. As for production, the original recording that appeared on ''The Idiot'' is raw and unpolished compared to Bowie's hit remake in 1983. Nile Rodgers, the producer of David Bowie's 1983 version of the song, offered his own interpretation of the lyrics: "I figured China Girl was about doing drugs ... because China is Ch ...

Fashion (David Bowie Song)
"Fashion" is a song by English musician David Bowie from his 1980 album '' Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps)''. Co-produced by Bowie and Tony Visconti and recorded from February to April 1980 at New York and London, it was the last song completed for the album. Originating as a reggae parody titled "Jamaica", "Fashion" is a post-punk, dance and funk track structurally similar to Bowie's " Golden Years". King Crimson guitarist Robert Fripp contributed lead guitar. Lyrically, "Fashion" acts as both a celebration of fashion trends and Bowie's critique of the individuals who mandate strict observance to those trends, who are labelled fascists and the " goon squad". Its accompanying music video, directed by David Mallet, reflects the lyrical themes, depicting Bowie and his musicians as street thugs interspersed with shots of dancers rehearsing and a parade of New Romantic individuals. Like " Ashes to Ashes", it was critically praised. Released by RCA Records in edited form as t ...

Ziggy Stardust (song)
"Ziggy Stardust" is a song written by English singer-songwriter David Bowie for his 1972 concept album ''The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars''. Co-produced by Bowie and Ken Scott, he recorded it at Trident Studios in London in November 1971 with his backing band the Spiders from Mars—comprising Mick Ronson, Trevor Bolder and Mick Woodmansey. Lyrically, the song is about Ziggy Stardust, a bisexual alien rock star who acts as a messenger for extraterrestrial beings. The character was influenced by English singer Vince Taylor, as well as the Legendary Stardust Cowboy and Kansai Yamamoto. Although Ziggy is introduced earlier on the album, this song is its centrepiece, presenting the rise and fall of the star in a very human-like manner. Musically, it is a glam rock song, like its parent album, and is based around a Ronson guitar riff. Since its release, "Ziggy Stardust" has received widespread acclaim from music critics, with the majority praising its st ...

Station To Station (song)
"Station to Station" is a song by English musician David Bowie. It was released in January 1976 as the title track and opener of his tenth studio album ''Station to Station'', as well as on a promotional 7-inch single in France the same month. Co-produced by Bowie and Harry Maslin, it was written and recorded at Cherokee Studios in Los Angeles between September and November 1975. At over 10 minutes in length, it is Bowie's longest studio recording. Opening with a train-like noise, the song's first half is a slow march, built around an atonal guitar riff, while the second half takes the form of a prog-disco suite in a different key and tempo than the first. It has been characterised as art rock and is influenced by the German electronic bands Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream. Lyrically, the song introduces Bowie's sinister persona the Thin White Duke, who became the mouthpiece for ''Station to Station'' and, throughout 1976, often the embodiment of Bowie himself. During the r ...
