Richard Schwartz (engineer)
Richard Schwartz is an American aerospace engineer known for his work in satellite technologies which made possible the development of modern global positioning systems (GPS). He was a recipient of the 2019 Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering. Education and early life Schwartz was born and raised in New York City, and attended high school at Brooklyn Tech. He graduated from Cooper Union with a degree in mechanical engineering in 1957, and eventually earned an MBA at Pepperdine University in 1972. Career and important contributions After graduation in 1957, Schwartz went to work at the Rocketdyne division of North American Aviation, which eventually became part of Rockwell International. During his time at Rockwell he was involved in the development of rocket propulsion systems and the space shuttle Orbiter program, as well as other projects connected with NASA. A spacecraft is a vehicle or machine designed to fly in outer space. A type of artificial satellite, spacecraft are used for a variety of purposes, including communications, Earth observation, meteorology, navigation, space colonization, planetary exploration, and transportation of humans and cargo. Bradford Parkinson
Bradford Parkinson (February 16, 1935) is an American engineer and inventor, retired United States Air Force Colonel and Emeritus Professor at Stanford University. He is best known as the lead architect, advocate and developer, with early contributions from Ivan Getting and Roger Easton, of the Air Force NAVSTAR program, better known as Global Positioning System. He was also the co-principal investigator (co-PI) and program manager on Gravity Probe B, which tested gravitomagnetism and was the first direct mechanical test of Einstein’s General Relativity. He has received numerous awards and honors for GPS and contributions to engineering and invention, including the Charles Stark Draper Prize, National Inventors Hall of Fame, and IEEE Medal of Honor, among others. GPS satellite blocks are the various production generations of the Global Positioning System (GPS) used for satellite navigation. The first satellite in the system, Navstar 1, was launched on 22 February 1978. The GPS satellite constellation is operated by the 2nd Space Operations Squadron (2SOPS) of Space Delta 8, United States Space Force. The GPS satellites circle the Earth at an altitude of about 20,000 km (12,427 miles) and complete two full orbits every day.
