Richard Rohac
Richard Rohac (1906–1956) was an Austrian designer and master metal craftsman. Identity controversy Richard Rohac was virtually unknown outside of Austria in his lifetime. His work was sold internationally with only his logo (and "Made in Austria") to identify its source, a common enough practice at the time. This anonymity led to Rohac's design work being mistakenly attributed to someone else with the same initials. In his 1996 reference book ''Art Deco Sculpture & Metalware'', Alfred W. Edward presented eleven colour plates of Rohac's work, captioned as bearing the "Rena Rosenthal touchmark." This "touchmark" was actually the maker's mark of Richard Rohac (mirror image capital Rs inside of a box), which Edward illustrated on page 67 of his book. Rena Rosenthal
Rena Rosenthal (1880–1966) was a trend-setting American retailer and businesswoman. Known principally for her exclusive Madison Avenue retail shop in New York City, she was an influential arbiter of taste and fashion in the interior decorating world, particularly during the introduction of modernism to North America. Biography Born Rena Kahn in New York City, Rena Rosenthal was the oldest child of Jacob (Jacques) and Eugenie Kahn and sister of architect Ely Jacques Kahn. Rena Rosenthal was a promoter of applied arts in the modernist style whose patronage helped launch the careers of such noted designers as Donald Deskey, Tommi Parzinger, Ernst Schwadron and Russel Wright. She established the Austrian Workshop, later Rena Rosenthal Studio and then Rena Rosenthal Gallery. Werkstätte Hagenauer Wien - (wHw) - was a family business in Vienna that produced fine, handcrafted objects for decoration and use over its nearly ninety-year history. The workshop closed in 1987 but the company's retail premises, opened in 1938 on Vienna's Opernring, survives today as a museum and shop. Carl Hagenauer Carl Hagenauer (1872 - 1928) founded what became the Werkstätte Hagenauer Wien in 1898. He began as an apprentice at Würbel & Czokally, a silverware producer in Vienna. He then trained as a goldsmith before founding his own business, one of many in Vienna producing small figurines and useful objects. His workshop produced his own designs and those of other artists such as Josef Hoffmann and Otto Prutscher. His sons Karl (1898 - 1956) and Franz (1906 - 1986) both became renowned designers.
