Richard Lugo (basketball)
Richard Lugo (born May 7, 1973 in Calabozo, Guárico, Venezuela) is a Venezuelan professional basketball player currently signed with Venezuelan team Guaiqueríes de Margarita. Lugo played one season of NCAA Division I college basketball at St. Francis College in New York. He averaged 9.5 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 4.5 blocks per game as a freshman starting center for the Terriers. Following this season, he signed as a professional with Panteras de Miranda in Venezuela. In 20 years as a professional, Lugo has played for several teams in Latin America and had brief stints in Europe and China. He was the Venezuelan Player of the Year in 1998 and is a four-time member of the Venezuelan All-Defensive Team (2000, 2005–07) and two-time Puerto Rican League Defensive Player of the Year (2003–04). The 2005 FIBA Americas Championship, later known as the FIBA AmeriCup (also known as The Tournament of the Americas), was hosted by the Dominican Republic, from August 24, to September 4, 2005. The games were played in Santo Domingo. This FIBA AmeriCup was to earn the four berths allocated to the Americas for the 2006 FIBA World Championship, in Japan. Escuadrilla de Alta Acrobacia Halcones ("Hawks High Aerobatics Squad"), known simply as the 'Hawks' (Halcones), is an active group of nine officers of the Chilean Air Force who are trained specifically for aerobatics. One of the Halcones' signature moves is recreating the Chilean star in the air using smoke. The team may be likened to the British Royal Air Force's Red Arrows for their affinity for complex, high-risk, aviation-based manoeuvers. The team flies Extra 300L aircraft. The 2006 FIBA World Championship was the 15th FIBA World Championship, the international basketball world championship for men's national teams. The tournament was hosted by Japan and held from 19 August to 3 September 2006. It was co-organised by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), Japan Basketball Association (JABBA) and the 2006 Organising Committee. For the first time since 1986, the World Championship was contested by 24 nations, eight more than in 2002. As a result, group rounds were conducted in four cities, with the knockout rounds being hosted by Saitama City. Spain won the tournament by beating Greece 70–47 in the championship final.
