Richard J. Lipton
Richard Jay Lipton (born September 6, 1946) is an Americans, American computer scientist who is Associate Dean of Research, Professor, and the Frederick G. Storey Chair in Computing in the College of Computing at the Georgia Institute of Technology. He has worked in computer science theory, cryptography, and DNA computing. Career In 1968, Lipton received his undergraduate degree in mathematics from Case Western Reserve University. In 1973, he received his Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University; his dissertation, supervised by David Parnas, is entitled ''On Synchronization Primitive Systems''. After graduating, Lipton taught at Yale University, Yale 1973–1978, at University of California, Berkeley, Berkeley 1978–1980, and then at Princeton University, Princeton 1980–2000. Competitive analysis is a method invented for analyzing online algorithms, in which the performance of an online algorithm (which must satisfy an unpredictable sequence of requests, completing each request without being able to see the future) is compared to the performance of an optimal ''offline algorithm'' that can view the sequence of requests in advance. An algorithm is ''competitive'' if its ''competitive ratio''—the ratio between its performance and the offline algorithm's performance—is bounded. Polynomial Hierarchy
In computational complexity theory, the polynomial hierarchy (sometimes called the polynomial-time hierarchy) is a hierarchy of complexity classes that generalize the classes NP and co-NP. Each class in the hierarchy is contained within PSPACE. The hierarchy can be defined using oracle machines or alternating Turing machines. In logic and computer science, the Boolean satisfiability problem (sometimes called propositional satisfiability problem and abbreviated SATISFIABILITY, SAT or B-SAT) is the problem of determining if there exists an interpretation that satisfies a given Boolean formula.
