Richard Hill (runner)
Richard Hill (born 12 February 1986) is an English former middle-distance runner who competed in the 800 metres. He ran for Great Britain, Notts AC and UWIC. On 10 June 2006, Richard won the A-race of the BMC Grand Prix event at Watford in a time of 1:45.10. This time made Richard British No 1 for 2006. The race itself was notable too, because due to second placed Michael Rimmer and third placed Sam Ellis also running good times, British athletes held the top 3 places in the European 800m rankings (for a short while). This was the first time this had occurred in over 20 years. Richard competed for GB at the European Championships in Gothenburg in 2006. Richard has an elder brother, Craig, who competed at county level in cross country helping pave a successful path for Richard in athletics. Middle-distance running events are track races longer than sprints, up to 3000 metres. The standard middle distances are the 800 metres, 1500 metres and mile run, although the 3000 metres may also be classified as a middle-distance event. 800 Metres
The 800 metres, or meters ( US spelling), is a common track running event. It is the shortest commonly run middle-distance running event. The 800 metres is run over two laps of an outdoor (400-metre) track and has been an Olympic event since the first modern games in 1896. During the winter track season the event is usually run by completing four laps of an indoor 200-metre track. The event was derived from the imperial measurement of a half mile (880 yards), a traditional English racing distance. 800m is 4.67m less than a half mile. The event combines aerobic endurance with anaerobic conditioning and sprint speed, so the 800m athlete has to combine training for both. Runners in this event are occasionally fast enough to also compete in the 400 metres but more commonly have enough endurance to 'double up' in the 1500m. Michael Rimmer
Michael Alan Rimmer (born 3 February 1986, in Southport) is an English middle-distance runner. He was born in Southport. Originally a member of Southport Waterloo AC, he changed clubs to rivals Liverpool Pembroke Sefton, who he still now races with. He also attended Christ The King catholic high school and broke numerous records in school mile races held at Victoria park, Southport. Michael was also a former sports scholar at Liverpool John Moores University. Running career He finished 8th in the 800m final at the 2006 European Athletics Championships in Gothenburg. Finished 2nd in his first European Cup in Munich (2007). He is the first male 800 m runner in British history to win national titles at under 15, 17, 20 and as a senior athlete. His personal best is 1:43.89 (lowering his previous mark by over half a second) which he set in Rieti in 2010. Sam Ellis (athlete)
Sam Ellis (born 23 June 1982) is a British 800 metres runner from Barnsley. He won a bronze medal in the 800 m at the 2006 European Athletics Championships. He is coached by Alan Hastey and is on the World Class Podium funding programme. Ellis attended Penistone Grammar School and is a graduate from Sheffield Hallam University in Architecture. National and international career Ellis was a member of Barnsley Athletics Club before joining City of Sheffield Athletic Club in 2007 and was formerly a 400m international, achieving a bronze medal at this distance in the 2000 Commonwealth Youth Games held in Edinburgh. In 2004 he was a surprise winner of the 800m at the AAA National Championships, claiming his first senior AAA gold. Despite the win at the AAAs, which were also used as the Olympic trials, Ellis was not picked for the Olympics that year as he had not achieved the qualifying standard.
