Richard Hilderbrand
Richard J. Hilderbrand (born January 26, 1969) is an American politician and businessman who served as a member of the Kansas Senate from the 13th district. After Jake LaTurner was appointed Kansas State Treasurer, Hilderbrand was selected to serve for the remainder of his term in the Senate. He resigned from the Senate in January 2023. Early career Prior to serving in the Senate, Hilderbrand operated an insurance company and served as a commissioner of Cherokee County, Kansas. Kansas's 13th Senate District
Kansas's 13th Senate district is one of 40 districts in the Kansas Senate. It has been represented by Republican Richard Hilderbrand since his 2017 appointment to replace fellow Republican Jake LaTurner. Geography District 13 covers Cherokee County, Crawford County, and parts of Bourbon and Labette Counties in the southeastern corner of the state. Communities in the district include Pittsburg, Fort Scott, Baxter Springs, Columbus, Galena, Frontenac, and Girard. The district is located entirely within Kansas's 2nd congressional district, and overlaps with the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 7th districts of the Kansas House of Representatives. Jacob Andrew Joseph LaTurner (born February 17, 1988) is an American politician serving as the U.S. representative for Kansas's 2nd congressional district. A member of the Republican Party, LaTurner was the 40th Kansas State Treasurer from 2017 to 2021 and a state senator from the 13th district from 2013 to 2017. Upon his appointment as Kansas State Treasurer by Governor Sam Brownback, LaTurner became the youngest statewide official in the country. He was elected to the post in his own right in 2018, becoming the youngest elected statewide official in the United States. Tim Shallenburger (born March 14, 1954) was Speaker of the Kansas House of Representatives and the Kansas State Treasurer. Biography Shallenburger was raised in Baxter Springs, Kansas. Cherokee County (county code CK) is a U.S. county located in Southeast Kansas. As of the 2020 census, the county population was 19,362. Its county seat is Columbus, and its most populous city is Baxter Springs. The latter became the first "cow town" in Kansas during the 1870s and the period of cattle drives. Baxter Springs is a city in Cherokee County, Kansas, United States, and located along Spring River. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 3,888. History For thousands of years, indigenous peoples had lived along the waterways throughout the west. The Osage migrated west from the Ohio River area of Kentucky, driven out by the Iroquois. They settled in Kansas by the mid-17th century, adopting Plains Indian traditions. They competed with other tribes and by 1750 they dominated much of what is now the region of Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma. One of the largest Osage bands was led by Chief Black Dog (''Manka - Chonka''). His men completed what became known as the Black Dog Trail by 1803. Galena is a city in Cherokee County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 2,761. History Although the railroad was built through the territory of Galena in 1871, the community did not start until the discovery of lead there in the spring of 1877. The first post office was established in 1877. The city was originally platted by the ''Galena Mining and Smelting Company'' and was to be known as Cornwall. The city was actually known as Short Creek when first established because of a nearby creek and was known as Bonanza briefly before taking the present name of Galena in 1877, which is named after the lead ore galena found in the area.
