Richard Coke Jr.
Richard Coke Jr. (November 16, 1790March 31, 1851) was a nineteenth-century congressman and lawyer from Virginia. He was the uncle of politician Richard Coke. Born in Williamsburg, Virginia, Coke pursued in preparatory studies as a young man. He graduated from the College of William and Mary, studied law and was admitted to the bar, commencing practice in Gloucester County, Virginia. He owned slaves. He was elected a Jacksonian to the United States House of Representatives in 1828, serving from 1829 to 1833. Coke died at his plantation called "Abingdon Place" in Gloucester County, Virginia on March 31, 1851 and was interred in the family cemetery on the estate. Richard Coke
Richard Coke (March 18, 1829May 14, 1897) was an American lawyer and statesman from Waco, Texas. He was the 15th governor of Texas from 1874 to 1876 and was a US Senator from 1877 to 1895. His governorship is notable for reestablishing local white supremacist rule in Texas following Reconstruction. Richard Coke was revered by many Texas Southern Democrats due to his perceived triumphs over Reconstruction era Federal control in Texas politics. His legacy is also marked by his use of the newly established state power to disfranchise African American voters and institute White Supremacist policies. Burwell Bassett, Jr. (March 18, 1764 – February 26, 1841) was an American planter and politician from New Kent County and for two decades from Williamsburg in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Like his father, he served in both chambers of the Virginia General Assembly, and in addition won election (and lost re-election) several times to the United States House of Representatives, where he served for more than a decade in three different districts, because of census-required reorganizations. The Political Graveyard is a website and database that catalogues information on more than 277,000 American political figures and political families, along with other information. The name comes from the website's inclusion of burial locations of the deceased (when known). It is also a pun; where bodies are buried can refer to the politicians accused of crimes or touched by scandal. History The site was created in 1996 by Lawrence Kestenbaum, then an academic specialist at Michigan State University, and later on staff at the University of Michigan. Kestenbaum was formerly a county commissioner, and in 2004 was elected to be County Clerk/Register of Deeds of Washtenaw County, Michigan.
