Richard A. Harrison
Richard Almgill Harrison (April 8, 1824July 30, 1904) was a nineteenth-century politician and lawyer from Ohio. Born in Thirsk, North Yorkshire, England, Harrison immigrated to the United States with his parents in 1832, settling in Ohio. He attended public schools, graduated from the Cincinnati Law School in 1846 and was admitted to the bar the same year, commencing practice in London, Ohio. He was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives in 1858 and 1859 and was a member of the Ohio Senate in 1860 and 1861. Harrison was elected a Unionist to the United States House of Representatives to fill a vacancy in 1861, serving from 1861 to 1863. Afterward, he continued practicing law in Columbus, Ohio until his death there on July 30, 1904. The Ohio Senate is the upper house of the Ohio General Assembly. The State Senate, which meets in the Ohio Statehouse in Columbus, first convened in 1803. Senators are elected for four year terms, staggered every two years such that half of the seats are contested at each election. Even numbered seats and odd numbered seats are contested in separate election years. The president of the Ohio Senate presides over the body when in session, and is currently Matt Huffman. Currently, the Senate consists of 25 Republicans and eight Democrats, with the Republicans controlling three more seats than the 22 required for a supermajority vote. Durbin Ward
Jesse Durbin Ward (February 11, 1819 – May 22, 1886) was an Ohio lawyer, politician, newspaper publisher, and American Civil War officer. Early life and career Ward was born in Augusta, Kentucky. His mother, Rebecca Patterson, named him in honor of the Rev. John Price Durbin (1800–1876), a noted Methodist preacher, who was a school mate of hers. Around 1823, the family moved to Fayette County, Indiana, in the southeastern part of that state. Josiah Morrow, the historian of Warren County, wrote of Ward: :His early opportunities for education were limited, but such was his thirst for knowledge that he became an insatiable reader, and, when he was eighteen years old he had read every book he had ever seen. Ohio State Bar Association
The Ohio State Bar Association (OSBA) is a voluntary bar association for the state of Ohio. History OSBA was founded on March 6, 1880 when the Cleveland Bar Association issued a call other Ohio local bar associations to meet at Case Hall in Cleveland. More than 400 lawyers met on July 8 to form the Association; Rufus P. Ranney was chosen as its first president. Today, membership includes almost 70 percent of all Ohio law practitioners. With the addition of paralegals, law students and other associate members, total membership is about 31,000. The OSBA does not license attorneys to practice law in Ohio; that function is administered by the Ohio Supreme Court. The association was founded in 1880 and is based in the state capital of Columbus.
