Ribnica, Pivka
Ribnica () is a small settlement on the right bank of the Reka River in the Municipality of Pivka in the Inner Carniola region of Slovenia. Name The name ''Ribnica'' was originally a hydronym derived from the common noun ''riba'' 'fish', thus referring to a stream with many fish and, by extension, a settlement along such a stream. History Ribnica was formerly a hamlet of Mala Pristava. In 1994, territory from Nadanje Selo, Mala Pristava, Nova Sušica, and Stara Sušica was combined to create Ribnica as a separate settlement. Mass graves Ribnica is the site of two mass graves from the end of World War II. They both contain the remains of German soldiers that fell in May 1945. The Rebri Mass Grave ( sl, Grobišče Rebri) lies at the end of a meadow east of the houses at the main crossroads in the settlement, at the edge of the woods. The Loka Mass Grave ( sl, Grobišče Loka) lies along the road from Ribnica to Buje about northwest of the crossroads. The Loka Mass Grave conta ...

Flag Of Slovenia
The national flag of Slovenia ( sl, zastava Slovenije) features three equal horizontal bands of white (top), blue, and red, with the Coat of arms of Slovenia located in the upper hoist side of the flag centered in the white and blue bands. The coat of arms is a shield with the image of Mount Triglav, Slovenia's highest peak, in white against a blue background at the center; beneath it are two wavy blue lines representing the Adriatic Sea and local rivers, and above it are three six-pointed golden stars arranged in an inverted triangle which are taken from the coat of arms of the Counts of Celje, the great Slovene dynastic house of the late 14th and early 15th centuries. The flag's colors are considered to be Pan-Slavism, Pan-Slavic, but they actually come from the Middle Ages, medieval coat of arms of the Duchy of Carniola, consisting of 3 stars, a mountain, and three colors (red, blue, yellow). crescent. The existing Slovene tricolor was raised for the first time in history duri ...

World War II
World War II or the Second World War, often abbreviated as WWII or WW2, was a world war that lasted from 1939 to 1945. It involved the vast majority of the world's countries—including all of the great powers—forming two opposing military alliances: the Allies and the Axis powers. World War II was a total war that directly involved more than 100 million personnel from more than 30 countries. The major participants in the war threw their entire economic, industrial, and scientific capabilities behind the war effort, blurring the distinction between civilian and military resources. Aircraft played a major role in the conflict, enabling the strategic bombing of population centres and deploying the only two nuclear weapons ever used in war. World War II was by far the deadliest conflict in human history; it resulted in 70 to 85 million fatalities, mostly among civilians. Tens of millions died due to genocides (including the Holocaust), starvation, ma ...

Mass Graves In Slovenia
Mass graves in Slovenia were created in Slovenia as the result of extrajudicial killings during and after the Second World War. These clandestine mass graves are also known as "concealed mass graves" ( sl, prikrita grobišča) or "silenced mass graves" () because their existence was concealed under the communist regime from 1945 to 1990.Ferenc, Mitja, & Ksenija Kovačec-Naglič. 2005. ''Prikrito in očem zakrito: prikrita grobišča 60 let po koncu druge svetovne vojne''. Ljubljana: Muzej novejše zgodovine. Some of the sites, such as the mass graves in Maribor, include some of the largest mass graves in Europe. Nearly 600 such sites have been registered by the Commission on Concealed Mass Graves in Slovenia, containing the remains of up to 100,000 victims. They have been compared by the Slovenian historian Jože Dežman to the Killing Fields in Cambodia. Background Many of the mass graves were created during the war, but the larger sites date from after the war. The wartime grav ...

Hydronyms include the proper names of rivers and streams, lakes and ponds, swamps and marshes, seas and oceans. As a subset of toponymy, a distinctive discipline of ''hydronymy'' (or ''hydronomastics'') studies the proper names of all bodies of water, the origins and meanings of those names, and their development and transmission through history. Classification by water types Within the onomastic classification, main types of hydronyms are (in alphabetical order): * helonyms: proper names of swamps, marshes and bogs, * limnonyms: proper names of lakes and ponds, * oceanonyms: proper names of oceans, * pelagonyms: proper names of seas and maritime bays, * potamonyms: proper names of rivers and streams. Reka River
The Reka (literally, 'river' in Slovene), also the Inner Carniola Reka ( sl, Notranjska Reka), is a river that starts as Big Creek ( hr, Vela voda) in Croatia, on the southern side of Mount Snežnik, and flows through western Slovenia, where it is also initially known as Big Creek (). The river is long, of which is in Slovenia. At the village of Škocjan it disappears underground through Škocjan Caves (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), flowing underneath the Slovenian Karst.
