Ria Vedder-Wubben
Hendrika Cornelia Maria "Ria" Vedder-Wubben (20 May 1951 – 23 August 2016) was a Dutch politician. As a member of the Christian Democratic Appeal she served in the Senate (Netherlands), Senate from 2003 to 2011. In the Senate she was concerned with pensions and tax law. Career Vedder-Wubben was born in the Hague on 20 May 1951. She attended the Hogere Burgerschool in Rijswijk. She subsequently studied to become an actuary. She spent her career in the field of actuarial science and pension advisement. Vedder-Wubben became politically active for the Christian Democratic Appeal in The Hague. She subsequently became member of the Senate for the party, serving from 10 June 2003 until 7 June 2011. In 2010 a government plan to cut the Algemene Ouderdomswet partner allowance was likely to fail in the vote in the Senate, with Vedder-Wubben devising a new plan from which the government went ahead. Senate (Netherlands)
The Senate ( or simply ' , literally "First Chamber of the States General", or sometimes ' ) is the upper house of the States General, the legislature of the Netherlands. Its 75 members are elected on lists by the members of the twelve States-Provincial and four electoral colleges for the Senate every four years, within three months of the provincial elections. All provinces and colleges have different electoral weight depending on their population. Members of the Senate tend to be veteran or part-time politicians at the national level, often having other roles. Christian Democratic Appeal
The Christian Democratic Appeal ( nl, Christen-Democratisch Appèl, ; CDA) is a Christian-democratic political party in the Netherlands. It was originally formed in 1977 from a confederation of the Catholic People's Party, the Anti-Revolutionary Party and the Christian Historical Union; it has participated in all but three cabinets since it became a unitary party. Health Minister Hugo de Jonge served as Leader of the Christian Democratic Appeal from July 2020 until his resignation the following December. Finance Minister Wopke Hoekstra was then chosen as ''lijstrekker'' for the 2021 general election, becoming the ''de facto'' party leader. Algemene Ouderdomswet
The ''Algemene Ouderdomswet'' ('General Old Age pensions Act, abbreviated AOW) is a 1956 Dutch law that installed a state pension for the elderly. This law was a continuation of a 1947 temporary law. The old law was a proposal by Willem Drees, while the new one came about when he was prime minister. It is the one thing he is remembered for most and his name is immortalised in the expression ''van Drees trekken'' (literally 'drawing from Drees' after the Dutch word ''steuntrekken'' for receiving social security). The law provides for a base pension from an 'AOW age' which increases with time for everyone who had a permanent residency (with or without work) in the Netherlands during the 50 years before his age catches up with the AOW age (2016: 65 years and 6 months; 2017: 65 years and 9 months).
