Rhynchoedura
''Rhynchoedura'' is a genus of lizards in the family Diplodactylidae. It includes six species, commonly known as beaked geckos, all of which are endemic to the arid zone of the Australian outback. Members of the genus are terrestrial and nocturnal, sheltering by day in spider burrows. They specialize in eating termites and are most abundant in open, recently burned areas. They can be characterized by their long bodies and narrow heads with enlarged scales at the tip of the snout. ''Rhynchoedura'' species are widespread and occupy a range of dry woodland, shrubland, grassland, and desert environments, and none are currently considered to be at risk of extinction. The genus was traditionally regarded as monotypic, with the single species '' Rhynchoedura ornata'' named by Albert Günther in 1867. A second species was described in 1985, though without widespread recognition at the time. In 2011 an extensive revision sampling the population across Australia found overlooked genetic div ...

Rhynchoedura Ormsbyi
The eastern beaked gecko (''Rhynchoedura ormsbyi'') is a gecko endemic to arid zones of New South Wales and Queensland in Australia. Taxonomy The species was described by Richard W. Wells and Cliff R. Wellington in 1985 as ''Rhynchoedura ormsbyi''. Rhynchoedura is an assemblage of desert Gekkonids, with ''R. ormsbyi'' being distinguished from Rhynchoedura ornata with a combination of traits, especially with the shape of the snout, composition of the scales, and the arrangement of the pre-anal pores. The first description of the species was described by Albert Günther as ''Rhynchoedura ornata'' in 1867, where the current species of ''R. ornata'' and ''R. ormsbyi'' were not differentiated. The species was redescribed by Richard W. Wells and Cliff R. Wellington as ''R. ormsbyi'' in 1985, then was resurrected by Mitzy Pepper as ''R. ormsbyi'' in 2011. Etymology The species name ''ormsbyi'' was named after Anthony Ormsby, the Australian herpetologist from Springwood, New South ...

Rhynchoedura Ornata
The western beaked gecko (''Rhynchoedura ornata'') is a species of gecko found throughout the interior of Australia. Taxonomy The species was first described by Albert Günther in 1867. It is placed in the ''Rhynchoedura'' genus, which are found throughout Australasia. This group shares characteristics with several species of '' Diplodactylus'', the conspicillatus group, Glen Storr has suggested that these could be transferred to this genus. Many of the characters of this species are found in '' Diplodactylus stenodactylus'', their appearance, habitat and distribution, and ''Diplodactylus pulcher'' has a similar snout and vertebrae. Synonyms for this species include ''Diplodactylus paraornatus'' and ''Rhynchoedura ormsbyi'' published by Wells & Wellington. Research into the phylogenetic relationships of ''Diplodactylus'' has identified two clades, and the resurrection of ''Lucasium'' has been proposed. ''Rhynchoedura'' was found to be distinct from ''D. byrnei'', ''D. steindachn ...

Diplodactylidae
The Diplodactylidae are a family in the suborder Gekkota (geckos), with over 150 species in 25 genera. These geckos occur in Australia, New Zealand, and New Caledonia. Diplodactylids are the most ecologically diverse and widespread family of geckos in both Australia and New Caledonia, and are the only family of geckos found in New Zealand. Three diplodactylid genera (''Oedura'', ''Rhacodactylus'', and ''Hoplodactylus'') have recently been split into multiple new genera. In previous classifications, the family Diplodactylidae is equivalent to the subfamily Diplodactylinae. Habitat Like other geckos, Diplodactylidae often live in warm areas that are around the temperature of . They mostly live in rain forests, up in the trees for protection. However, they are also found in cooler climates such as those found in southern New Zealand, where they have been found to be active in temperatures ranging from 1.4 to 31.9C. Reproduction Viviparity is notable as a trait unique to diploda ...

Arid
A region is arid when it severely lacks available water, to the extent of hindering or preventing the growth and development of plant and animal life. Regions with arid climates tend to lack vegetation and are called xeric or desertic. Most arid climates straddle the Equator; these regions include parts of Africa, Asia, South America, North America, and Australia. Change over time The distribution of aridity at any time is largely the result of the general circulation of the atmosphere. The latter does change significantly over time through climate change. For example, temperature increase by 1.5–2.1 percent across the Nile Basin over the next 30–40 years could change the region from semi-arid to arid, significantly reducing the land usable for agriculture. In addition, changes in land use can increase demands on soil water and thereby increase aridity.
