Angleton is a city in and the county seat of Brazoria County, Texas, United States, within the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land metropolitan area. Angleton lies at the intersection of State Highway 288, State Highway 35, and the Union Pacific Railroad. The population was 19,429 at the 2020 census. Angleton is in the 14th congressional district, and is represented by Republican Congressman Randy Weber. History Angleton was founded in 1890 near the center of Brazoria County and named for the wife of the general manager of the Velasco Terminal Railway. A bitter rivalry emerged between the town and nearby Brazoria for the location of the county seat; Angleton was chosen as the seat in 1896 and rechosen by county-wide election in 1913. Snipe, Texas
Snipe is an unincorporated community in central Brazoria County, Texas, United States. It was formerly a distinct community. It is located within the Greater Houston metropolitan area. History Raymond Weems, Snipe's first postmaster, named Snipe after a facetious reference made about the place by his father's hunting partner. Snipe was established in the former Ward Plantation area owned by Asa Mitchell. The St. Louis, Brownsville and Mexico Railway laid a track through the community around 1905. Locals wanted the station to be named after early settler Ed Matthews, but it was instead named Edmonds. A post office operated in Snipe from 1921 to 1949; the post office served the Retrieve Prison Farm (later the Wayne Scott Unit). A railroad bunkhouse and commissary were in operation in 1929. Clute, Texas
Clute is a city in Brazoria County, Texas, within the Houston metropolitan area. As of the 2020 U.S. Census, the city population was 10,604. The city gained some fame with the discovery of a fossilized mammoth named Asiel. There is now a restaurant/museum of the same name to honor this discovery. The Brazosport Facts
The ''Brazosport Facts'' is the largest daily newspaper for Brazoria County, Texas, a part of the Greater Houston area. The newspaper is owned by Southern Newspapers Inc., and began in 1913. History The paper was started by printer Roy Ruffin as the ''Freeport Facts'' months after the 1912 founding of Freeport, Texas by the Freeport Sulphur Company. One year later, the paper was acquired by C.P. Kendall, Sr. who also owned newspapers in Port Aransas, and the ''Angleton Times'' in Angleton. A 1932 Freeport hurricane destroyed the ''Facts'' building and killed 40 people. Separate area newspapers, the ''Brazoria County Review'', ''Velasco World'', and ''West Columbia Light'' were acquired by businessman W.D. Johnston.
