Resurrection (1960 Film)
''Resurrection'' (russian: Воскресение, Voskreseniye) is a Soviet film made in 1960-1961, directed by Mikhail Schweitzer and based on his and Yevgeny Gabrilovich's adaptation of the Russian writer Leo Tolstoy's 1899 novel of the same name. Plot In the District Court, a jury hears about the fatal poisoning of a merchant Smyelkov. Among the three accused of the crime is the burgher Ekaterina Maslova, a prostitute. Maslova is innocent, but, as a result of a miscarriage of justice, she is sentenced to four years' hard labor in Siberia. At the trial, one of the jurors is Prince Dmitri Nekhlyudov, who recognizes the defendant. About ten years ago, he seduced and abandoned her. Feeling guilty about this, Nekhlyudov decides to hire a well-known lawyer for her, to appeal her conviction, and to help her with money. Mikhail Schweitzer
Mikhail (Moisei) Abramovich Schweitzer (russian: Михаил (Моисей) Абрамович Швейцер, 16 February 1920, Perm – 2 June 2000, Moscow) was a Soviet and Russian film director and screenwriter. People's Artist of the USSR (1990). Biography Mikhail Schweitzer graduated from the Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography in the directing class of the Sergei Eisenstein art workshop. He started to work at Mosfilm since 1943. Schweitzer was an assistant director of ''Man No 217'' film production in 1944. Mikhail Romm was a director of that film. When Schweitzer lost his job after his first movie '' Glorious Path'' which was filming in the ''contestation with a cosmopolitism'' period, he could be accepted to work at Sverdlovsk Film Studio only with Mikhail Romm's help. Vladislav Ignatievich Strzhelchik (russian: Владисла́в Игна́тьевич Стрже́льчик) (1921–1995) was a Soviet and Russian actor. People's Artist of the USSR (1974). Biography Vladislav Strzhelchik born in Petrograd (now Saint Petersburg, Russia). His father, Ignatiy Petrovich was a native of Poland ( pl, Ignacy Strzelczyk) who settled in St. Petersburg at the beginning of the 20th century. In 1938 Vladislav Strzhelchik was accepted into the studio of the Gorky Bolshoi Drama Theater and in the same year he became an actor of this theater, where he worked all his life. He graduated from the studio only in 1947. During the Great Patriotic War, Vladislav Strzhelchik was drafted into the Red Army and served in the infantry at the forefront. Maya Grigoryevna Bulgakova (russian: Ма́йя Григо́рьевна Булга́кова; 19 May 19327 October 1994) was a Soviet and Russian actress. She was one of the People's Artist of the RSFSR (1976). Biography Bulgakova was born on 19 May 1932 in the village of Buki (now the Kyiv Oblast, Ukraine). In 1941 the Bulgakov family moved to Kramatorsk, to this place they later returned from evacuation. In Kramatorsk, Bulgakova successfully graduated from high school and decided after graduation to become an actress.
