New South Wales Legislative Council
The New South Wales Legislative Council, often referred to as the upper house, is one of the two chambers of the parliament of the Australian state of New South Wales. The other is the Legislative Assembly. Both sit at Parliament House in the state capital, Sydney. It is normal for legislation to be first deliberated on and passed by the Legislative Assembly before being considered by the Legislative Council, which acts in the main as a house of review. The Legislative Council has 42 members, elected by proportional representation in which the whole state is a single electorate. Members serve eight-year terms, which are staggered, with half the Council being elected every four years, roughly coinciding with elections to the Legislative Assembly. Doug Moppett
Douglas Frederick Moppett (14 May 1940 – 18 June 2002) was an Australian politician. He was a National Party of Australia – NSW, Country Party, later National Party of Australia – NSW, National Party, member of the New South Wales Legislative Council from 1976 to 1978 and again from 1991 up until 2002. He died from liver cancer a week after his announced his retirement from Parliament. Biography Moppett was born in Sydney, and was a grazier and pastoralist before entering politics. Peter Wong (Australian Politician)
Peter Hon Jung Wong () (born 12 October 1942) is an Australian politician. A figure in the Sydney Chinese community and former member of the Liberal Party of Australia, he became concerned over the Liberal Party's refusal to oppose strongly the rise of Pauline Hanson and her One Nation Party, and ultimately went on to found the Unity Party. He served as their leader from 1998 to 1999 and represented the party in the New South Wales Legislative Council from March 1999 until March 2007. Peter Breen (Australian Politician)
Peter James Breen (born 4 November 1947) is a former Australian politician. He was a solicitor before entering politics, achieving a Diploma of Law from Sydney University. He was originally a member of the Liberal Party, serving as President of the Campbelltown Young Liberals 1971–1972. From 1995 to 1998 he was Secretary of the Australian Bill of Rights Group, and in 1998 joined Reform the Legal System. In the 1999 New South Wales election he was elected to the Legislative Council. Breen joined the Labor Party on 5 May 2006, but resigned on 18 July to form the Human Rights Party. He unsuccessfully contested the 2007 New South Wales state election. Alasdair Webster
Alasdair Paine Webster (born 12 February 1934) is a retired Australian politician. Early life Webster was born in East Maitland, New South Wales. He underwent military service in 1953, attended the University of New England, and became a teacher. From 1973 to 1984, Webster was chief superintendent of Daruk Boys' Home in Windsor, New South Wales. Politics Federal politics In 1984, Webster was elected to the Australian House of Representatives for the seat of Macquarie as a member of the Liberal Party. Frederick John Nile (born 15 September 1934) is an Australian politician and ordained Christian minister. Nile has been a member of the New South Wales Legislative Council since 1981, except for a period in 2004. Brian Burston
Brian Burston (born 25 February 1948) is an Australian who was a former Senator for New South Wales from 2016 to 2019, originally representing One Nation. After falling out with party leader Pauline Hanson over company tax cuts, Burston left One Nation and joined businessman Clive Palmer's newly relaunched United Australia Party.
