1932 New South Wales State Election
The 1932 New South Wales state election was held on 11 June 1932. This election was for all of the 90 seats in the 30th New South Wales Legislative Assembly and it was conducted in single member constituencies with compulsory preferential voting. It was a landslide victory for the UAP/Country Party coalition of Bertram Stevens, which had a majority of 42 in the Assembly. The 29th parliament of New South Wales was dissolved on 18 May 1932 after the Governor, Sir Philip Game dismissed the Premier Jack Lang (see the crisis of 1931–32) and commissioned Bertram Stevens to form a caretaker government. Lang's government had a majority of 20 at the time of the dismissal. In this election, the Australian Labor Party (NSW) and the Federal Executive of the Australian Labor Party, which had separated in 1931 (see Lang Labor), endorsed separate candidates. Milton Jarvie
Milton Livingstone Fredericks Jarvie, (12 July 1891 – 31 January 1965) was an Australian politician, businessman and soldier. Jarvie was born at Pyramul, south of Mudgee, New South Wales, to schoolteacher John Rose Shaw Jarvie and Jean Wade, ''née'' Fredericks. He attended Enmore High School and the University of Sydney, receiving a Diploma of Economics. Around 1914 he married Geraldine James. From 1915 to 1920 he served in the Australian Imperial Force's Provost Corps in the First World War, rising to the rank of major and being decorated with the Military Cross. For his later service with the Citizens Military Force, Jarvie received the Efficiency Decoration. After the war he became a business manager and an executive officer with the British Australasian Tobacco Company. Gus Kelly (politician)
Christopher Augustus "Gus" Kelly (21 August 1890 – 25 March 1967) was an Australian politician. He was a Labor Party member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1925 to 1932 and again from 1935 until his death in 1967, representing the electorate of Bathurst. He held numerous ministerial positions between 1941 and 1965 in McKell Labor Government. Early life Kelly was born near Dubbo, New South Wales and was the son of John Kelly, labourer, and Margaret Kearney. His father died when Kelly was aged and his family moved to Wellington, where he was educated to elementary level at the Wellington convent by Catholic nuns. Gordon Wilkins
Gordon Wilkins (23 August 1885 – 6 April 1938) was an Australian politician. Born in Mudgee to farmer Abel Wilkins and his wife, he attended Wellington Public School and joined the postal service. He subsequently joined his father as a stock and station agent and auctioneer before becoming a farmer and grazier. After serving as a lieutenant in the France with the Australian Imperial Force from 1915 to 1918, where he lost a leg, he was the first president of the Wellington Returned Servicemen's League. On 25 September 1925 he married Margery Thomas, with whom he had a son. Lou Cunningham
Lucien Lawrence "Lou" Cunningham (4 June 1889 – 23 March 1948) was an Australian farmer and politician. Early life Cunningham was born at Inverell, New South Wales, to a farmer, Eugene Cunningham, and his wife Mary, née Edgeworth, both born in Ireland. He was educated at Goonoowigall Public School and eventually ran the family farm. He became involved in the Australian Workers' Union. Politics Cunningham was president of the local branches of the No Conscription League and the Australian Labor Party, and, having failed to enter the New South Wales Legislative Assembly in 1917 via the seat of Gough, he defeated Labor defector William Webster in 1919 to take the seat of Gwydir in the Australian House of Representatives. Ben Wade (politician)
Benjamin Martin Wade (12 July 1883 – 20 December 1958) was an Australian politician. Born at Tenterden to grazier William Martin Wade and Ann Hogan, he attended school at Tenterden and Inverell before finding work at the Lands Department in Narrabri. He married Bertha Matilda Oberle on 17 April 1917, with whom he had three children; she died in 1923. He remarried Claire Vaughan Reece, ''née'' Williams, on 10 January 1927, with whom he also had three children; she died on 26 March 1952 in Rome. His final marriage was to Lillian May Sanderson on 21 May 1953. After resigning from the Lands Department to teach at Inverell, Wade travelled to Sydney and entered the building trade, establishing his own Inverell business in 1905. He became a local grazier, and was an alderman at Inverell from 1921 to 1923, 1948 to 1952 and 1953 to 1958 (serving as mayor 1956–58). James McGirr
James "Jim" McGirr, Justice of the peace, JP (6 February 1890 – 27 October 1957) was the Australian Labor Party (New South Wales Branch), Labor Premier of New South Wales from 6 February 1947 to 3 April 1952. A Catholic, McGirr was the seventh son of John Patrick McGirr, farmer and Irish immigrant, and Mary McGirr, whose maiden name was O'Sullivan. John Quirk (politician)
John Quirk (18 May 1870 – 13 December 1938) was an Australian politician. Quirk was born at Balmain in Sydney to dairyman John Quirk and Margaret, ''née'' McClapperty. After attending St Joseph's School in Rozelle, he joined the Postmaster-General's department in 1886 and began a long-running position at the Balmain post-office. In 1889 he married Sarah Gaillie in Sydney, with whom he had five children. A founder of the Letter Carriers' Union (which became the Postal Workers' Union), he was also a founding member of the Rozelle Labor League in 1893.
