Gordon Wilkins
Gordon Wilkins (23 August 1885 – 6 April 1938) was an Australian politician. Born in Mudgee to farmer Abel Wilkins and his wife, he attended Wellington Public School and joined the postal service. He subsequently joined his father as a stock and station agent and auctioneer before becoming a farmer and grazier. After serving as a lieutenant in the France with the Australian Imperial Force from 1915 to 1918, where he lost a leg, he was the first president of the Wellington Returned Servicemen's League. On 25 September 1925 he married Margery Thomas, with whom he had a son. Mudgee, New South Wales
Mudgee is a town in the Central West of New South Wales, Australia. It is in the broad fertile Cudgegong River valley north-west of Sydney and is the largest town in the Mid-Western Regional Council local government area as well as being the council seat. As at June 2021 its population was 12,563. Estimated resident population, 30 June 2018. The district lies across the edge of the geological structure known as the Sydney Basin. History Wiradjuri people The Mudgee and Dabee clans of the Wiradjuri people lived at and around the site of what is now the town of Mudgee on the Cudgegong River. Gus Kelly (politician)
Christopher Augustus "Gus" Kelly (21 August 1890 – 25 March 1967) was an Australian politician. He was a Labor Party member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1925 to 1932 and again from 1935 until his death in 1967, representing the electorate of Bathurst. He held numerous ministerial positions between 1941 and 1965 in McKell Labor Government. Early life Kelly was born near Dubbo, New South Wales and was the son of John Kelly, labourer, and Margaret Kearney. His father died when Kelly was aged and his family moved to Wellington, where he was educated to elementary level at the Wellington convent by Catholic nuns. He initially worked as a labourer with the New South Wales Government Railways and then later at the Portland, New South Wales limestone quarry. Following an accident, he became a cement tester. United Australia Party
The United Australia Party (UAP) was an Australian political party that was founded in 1931 and dissolved in 1945. The party won four federal elections in that time, usually governing in coalition with the Country Party. It provided two prime ministers: Joseph Lyons ( 1932–1939) and Robert Menzies ( 1939–1941). The UAP was created in the aftermath of the 1931 split in the Australian Labor Party. Six fiscally conservative Labor MPs left the party to protest the Scullin Government's financial policies during the Great Depression. Led by Joseph Lyons, a former Premier of Tasmania, the defectors initially sat as independents, but then agreed to merge with the Nationalist Party and form a united opposition.
