Reliance, Delaware And Maryland
Reliance is an unincorporated community located on the border of the U.S. states of Maryland and Delaware. The Maryland side of the community has portions in Caroline and Dorchester counties, while the Delaware side is located within Sussex County. Reliance is along Delaware Route 20 and Maryland Route 392 at the junction with Maryland Route 577, west of Seaford. It was previously known as Johnson's Crossroads.Kaminkow, Marion J. Delaware Route 20
Delaware Route 20 (DE 20) is an east–west state highway in Sussex County, Delaware. Its western terminus is the Maryland state line in Reliance, where it continues as Maryland Route 392 (MD 392). Its eastern terminus is DE 54 west of Fenwick Island. The route runs through rural areas of Sussex County and passes through the towns of Seaford, Millsboro, and Dagsboro. DE 20 intersects U.S. Route 13 (US 13) in Seaford, US 9 in Hardscrabble, US 113 and DE 24/ DE 30 in Millsboro, DE 26 in Dagsboro, and DE 17 in Roxana. DE 20 was originally created by 1936 to run from the Maryland border east to US 113 in Millsboro. By 1970, it was realigned to bypass Seaford. Reverse Underground Railroad
The Reverse Underground Railroad is the name given, sardonically, to the pre-American Civil War practice of kidnapping in free states not only fugitive slaves but free blacks as well, transporting them to slave states, and selling them as slaves, or occasionally getting a reward for return of a fugitive. Those who used the term were pro-slavery and angered at an "underground railroad" helping slaves escape. Also, the so-called "reverse underground railroad" had incidents but not a network, and its activities did not always take place in secret. Rescues of blacks being kidnapped were unusual. Three types of kidnapping methods were employed: physical abduction, inveiglement (kidnapping through trickery) of free blacks, and apprehension of fugitives. Patty Cannon
Patty Cannon, whose birth name may have been Lucretia Patricia Hanly (c. 1759/1760 or 1769 – May 11, 1829), was an illegal slave trader, murderer and the co-leader of the Cannon–Johnson Gang of Maryland–Delaware. The group operated for about a decade in the early 19th century and abducted hundreds of free Black people and fugitive slaves, along the Delmarva Peninsula, across multiple state lines to sell into slavery in southern states such as Alabama and Mississippi. The activity became known as the Reverse Underground Railroad. Mayor Joseph Watson of Philadelphia and Governor John Andrew Shulze of Pennsylvania worked to recover young free Black people kidnapped by the gang in the summer of 1825 and to prosecute the gang members. Seaford is a city located along the Nanticoke River in Sussex County, Delaware, United States. According to the 2010 Census Bureau figures, the population of the city is 6,928, an increase of 3.4% from the 2000 census. Maryland Route 577 (MD 577) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Maryland. Known as Reliance Road, the state highway runs from MD 392 at Reliance north to MD 313 near Federalsburg. MD 577 follows the Dorchester– Caroline county line for its entire length. The state highway is considered to be in Caroline County for maintenance purposes. Maryland Route 392
Maryland Route 392 (MD 392) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Maryland. The state highway runs from MD 16 in East New Market east to the Delaware state line at Reliance, where the highway continues east as Delaware Route 20 (DE 20). MD 392 connects East New Market with Hurlock as well as Seaford, Delaware via DE 20. The state highway was constructed from Finchville to Reliance in the early 1930s. MD 392 was extended west to Hurlock in 1951 and to East New Market in 1957. Route description MD 392 begins at an intersection with MD 16 (Mount Holly Road) just outside the town of East New Market. The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is a database of name and locative information about more than two million physical and cultural features throughout the United States and its territories, Antarctica, and the associated states of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, and Palau.
