Relapse Records is an American independent record label based in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania. It was founded by Matthew F. Jacobson in 1990. The label features many grindcore, death metal, metalcore and sludge metal artists. History The label was started by Matthew F. Jacobson in August, 1990 in his parents' basement in Aurora, Colorado. The first two releases on the label were 7-inch singles by the bands Velcro Overdose and Face of Decline, closely followed by three death metal bands that would become among the biggest on the label, Deceased, Suffocation, and Incantation. After this, Jacobson became acquainted with William Yurkiewicz Jr., who became his partner in the record label. Yurkiewicz had founded his own record label, which was soon to release albums from the bands General Surgery, Disrupt, Destroy, Misery, and Yurkiewicz's own band Exit-13. Industrial music is a genre of music that draws on harsh, mechanical, transgressive or provocative sounds and themes. Exit-13 was an American grindcore band from Millersville, Pennsylvania, United States. The band were formed in 1989 by Relapse Records founder and co-owner Bill Yurkiewicz (vocals), guitarist Steve O'Donnell and bassist Joel DiPietro. Their early recordings, including the ''Disembowelling Party'', ''The Unrequited Love of Chicken Soup'' and ''Eat More Crust'' demos (all 1989), their debut full-length ''Green Is Good'' (1990) and the EPs ''The Unrequited Love of Chicken Soup'' (1990) and ''Spare the Wrench, Surrender the Earth'' (1991) featured a line-up of Yurkiewicz, O'Donnell and DiPietro, with drum duties being shared between Bill Schaeffer and Pat McCahan. Misery (band)
Misery was an Australian death metal band from Brisbane, Queensland. Since forming in 1991, the band has released four albums and an EP. The band split in 2005, but has reformed once more for an East Coast Australian tour in support of its final album ''On Demon Wings'' in 2009. Background The group was formed in 1991 by bassist Damon Robinson and guitarist Scott Edgar, who had both been members of earlier Brisbane groups Guardian, Northwinds, Savage, A.I.M. and Black Magic. Disrupt
Disrupt was an American crust punk band from Lynn, Massachusetts that was active from 1987 to 1993. The lineup was Jay Stiles and Pete Kamarinos (vocals), Chris Drake (guitar), Harry Haralabatos (drums), Tony Leone (bass). After recording one rehearsal demo, Tony and Harry left the band. Brad Jones (drums) and Mike Williams (guitar) joined in the spring of 1988. Brad left the band a couple of months later and Mike started playing drums. With this lineup, they recorded the ''Millions Die For Moneymaking'' thirteen-song demo with Jay also playing bass in November 1988. In the spring of 1989, Mike and Chris left the band and Harry their first drummer rejoined so they could record songs that at the time were supposed to be on a split 7" with Extreme Noise Terror. General Surgery is a Swedish goregrind group known as one of the earliest Carcass clones. Their 1991 debut ''Necrology'' was released by Relapse Records and would be General Surgery's only material released until 2001, when the group recorded one track for the Carcass tribute album, ''Requiems of Revulsion''. Incantation is an American death metal band that was formed by John McEntee and Paul Ledney in 1989. They are one of the leaders in the New York City death-metal scene along with fellow bands Suffocation, Mortician and Immolation, even though the band is currently located in Johnstown, Pennsylvania.
