Reginaldo Lopes
Reginaldo Lázaro de Oliveira Lopes (born 2 April 1973) is a Brazilian economist and politician. He serves as a federal deputy for the Workers' Party (PT) for Minas Gerais. He is the current leader of the PT caucus in the Chamber of Deputies. Early life and education Lopes was born on 2 April 1973 in Bom Sucesso, Minas Gerais. He attended the Federal University of São João del-Rei, where he received his degree in economics. Lopes is the author of the Access to Information Law (LAI). Political career He was elected federal deputy in the 2002 elections with 64,000 votes. He was reelected in 2006, 2010, and 2014, where he received 310,226 votes and was the most-voted candidate in Minas Gerais. In 2016, Lopes was a candidate for mayor of Belo Horizonte, leading a coalition formed by the PT and the Communist Party of Brazil. During the campaign, federal deputy served as his running mate. The Chamber of Deputies ( pt, Câmara dos Deputados) is a federal legislative body and the lower house of the National Congress of Brazil. The chamber comprises 513 deputies, who are elected by proportional representation to serve four-year terms. The current President of the Chamber is the Deputy Arthur Lira ( PP- AL), who was elected on 1 February 2021. Structure The number of deputies elected is proportional to the size of the population of the respective state (or of the Federal District) as of 1994. However, no delegation can be made up of less than eight or more than seventy seats. Thus the least populous state elects eight federal deputies and the most populous elects seventy. These restrictions favour the smaller states at the expense of the more populous states and so the size of the delegations is not exactly proportional to population.
